Updated NIO ES6 bags close to 30,000 pre-orders in 72 hours, nearly surpassing Tesla Model Y monthly Chinese sales
NIO's ES6 electric compact SUV was announced on May 24, when pre-orders for the vehicle opened at all of its Chinese dealerships. In the three days following the announcement, NIO amassed 29,700 pre-orders, according to a report by CarFans (via CarNewsChina). Assuming a pre-order cancellation rate of 10%, that represents around 26,730 units in future sales.
Tesla's most popular vehicle in the Chinese market is the Model Y — conveniently competing in the same segment as the ES6 — which reportedly sold an average of around 30,351 units in Q1 of 2023. China's best-selling electric SUV for April 2023, on the other hand, was the BYD Song, which sold 33,007 units. Looking at the competition, the ES6's successful pre-order run is even more impressive.
As with all pre-orders, it remains to be seen how the vehicle fares in actual sales numbers when the final pre-order confirmation date of July 31 rolls around. The NIO ES6, on paper, is certainly an impressive vehicle. The standard AWD drivetrain that delivers 360 kW (482.8 hp) and propels the electric SUV to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, while the standard range trim delivers 490 km (305 miles) of range and starts at a relatively tame RMB 368,000 (~US$51,985).
