If you want to buy an Ultrabook, then buy this one. It's only 1.1kg and 16mm thick, but it has a conventional feature-set and it feels very comfortable to use. We enjoyed reviewing it very much, more so than the models from Acer and ASUS. Our only quibbles are with the screen's viewing angles, the stiff touchpad buttons and the slightly sharp corners of the chassis.

The Toshiba Satellite Z830 is the most promising Ultrabook design we've seen so far, if only because it doesn't slavishly ape the MacBook Air. Much depends on pricing and battery life though which we won't be able to judge until final production models arrive in the UK later this year.

Light as a feather. The power of a big notebook, but as light as a netbook. The Z830, as Toshiba's first ultrabook, presents itself with good battery runtimes and outdoor suitability. Where is the device positioned in comparison to the ultrabook competition from Asus, Acer, Lenovo and co.? Find all details here in this review.

While we couldn’t get Toshiba to give us any hints about the final retail price, it sure looks like this Satellite will end up being a good solution for those wanting the features and benefits of the Ultrabook design combined with a study chassis, long battery life, and full-sized ports. We sure can’t wait to get our hands on the final production model and will be keeping our fingers crossed for a reasonably low sticker price.

Toshiba’s lightweight Satellite Z830 Ultrabook shows the days of big, heavy notebooks are numbered. What’s great about this Ultrabook is that it feels like a traditional notebook that’s been miraculously slimmed down to almost tablet thickness. The array of ports and the performance are those of a big computer, not of an ultra-thin.

The Toshiba Satellite Z830-10U costs less than the Portégé Z830-10P and has better hardware specifications. Business users will have to swallow the difference though in order to get Windows 7 Professional. For anyone else, the Satellite is the best option of the two Toshibas this month.

With the Z830, Toshiba has created one of the lightest and most affordable Ultrabooks on the market, yet it’s packed with connectivity, sports a matt screen, and offers premium touches like a backlit keyboard. Unfortunately, its staid design limits its visual appeal compared to rivals, its keyboard doesn’t provide the best typing experience, and poor viewing angles let the 13.3in screen down badly. Like most Ultrabooks we’ve seen, it comes close, but no cigar.

Ultrabook city is booming, with every computer manufacturer arriving in town on the back of an Intel-powered cart, hoping to strike a rich vein of laptop gold. The Toshiba Satellite Z830 may be slim and light, but it fails to beat its ultrabook competitors in power, build quality and battery life. Your £1,000 would be better spent elsewhere.

The Satellite Pro Z830-10U is one of the best ultrabooks we've yet seen, and certain features, such as connectivity and touchpad usability, outshine all its rivals. However, there are still niggling issues such as build quality and excessive bloatware that mar the whole experience. This is certainly a great piece of kit from Toshiba, but it feels like an extra step onwards from the Portege rather than the completely different computing experience the Asus Zenbook provides. Extra pressure from evolving tablets such as the Asus Transformer Prime also gives us something to consider.

Intel Core i3:
2367M: Power efficient ULV processor clocked at 1.4 GHz without Turbo boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1000 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.
Intel Core i5:
2467M: Power saving ULV processor clocked at 1.6-2.3 GHz due to Turbo boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1150 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.
13.3: This is a common display format for subnotebooks. Netbooks, UMPC and some subnotebooks have tinier displays. Nevertheless, the majority of standard laptops has a higher format. The advantage of a small display is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.

1.1 kg:
This subnotebook is one of the most lightweight of all notebooks and can be carried very easily. There exist hardly any models in this extreme class of weight. 7-9 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
1.11 kg:
78.07%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
