Toshiba Satellite P100-222 Review

I wanted a machine that I could carry around every once in a while and have it rest on my desk the rest of the time. I'm not a big fan of 17" desktop replacements. I prefer laptops that you can actually put on your lap. With this though, I have no regrets and am enjoying the power very much. It's like having a future proof laptop that you know will last. At under 8 pounds, it's not impossible to carry around.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS: This is the smaller version of the 7900 GTX with less shader- and vertex-pipelines and less current consumption. Nevertheless it is not apt for small notebooks. The performance is near to the 7800 GTX, but needs clearly less energy. It was used in 17" notebooks, because of heat issues.
These cards should be able to display all current games with fluent framerates but not all with high detail settings. Especially demanding games like Crysis, Age of Conan, or Mass Effect are only playable with lower settings. Less demanding (and older) games, like Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, or Battlefield 2142 can be played with higher detail levels.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)

17.1": Nowadays, meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. 17 inch laptops are built only in 16:10 format.
The DTR-Laptops can't be carried easily, need much current, but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.

3.2 kg: This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.
Toshiba: Toshiba is one of the biggest international notebook-manufacturer. There exist many reviews for Toshiba models. The ratings of German magazines are very positive, but the relation of price and value is evaluated rather average. The ratings according the features and display are also quite well for Toshiba notebooks.
