The power to run demanding tasks such as CAD or local AI does not come cheap - expensive mobile workstations like the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 or the ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 start at roughly €3,000, delivering either the most performance (ThinkPad P16 Gen 3) or a good mix of performance and mobility (ThinkPad P1 Gen 8) with a premium design. But not everyone needs the best and not everyone wants to spend more than €3,000 on a laptop. This is why the ThinkPad P16v Gen 3 may be the sweet spot of the Lenovo workstation lineup, as this model is more affordable while still packing in the same performance as the ThinkPad P1, starting at €1,940 when it launches this September.
Lenovo ThinkPad P16v Gen 3: New design is USB-C powered
Compared to older P16v models, the P16v Gen 3 launches with a new design, trading in the plastic lid and classic top-base hinges of the predecessor for an aluminum lid and unified drop-down hinge. The new design features thinner bezels and also USB-C charging instead of the old proprietary Slim tip charging port. The weight of the P16v G3 stays the same at roughly 2.1 kg, which means it is heavier than the P1 Gen 8 (1.8 kg), but more lightweight than the P16 G3 (2.5 kg).
On the inside, this new P16v Gen 3 is powered by an Arrow Lake H processor, and it features up to the Nvidia RTX Pro 2000. This matches the much more expensive ThinkPad P1 Gen 8, the same is true for the storage (2x M.2 2280 SSD, RAID 0/1). When it comes to memory, the Lenovo ThinkPad P16v Gen 3 beats its more expensive cousin, as it can be configured 96 GB of DDR5 memory (2x SO-DIMM).
Lenovo ThinkPad P16v Gen 3: Most affordable ThinkPad with SD card slot
Compared to the even less expensive ThinkPad P16s Gen 3, the ThinkPad P16v Gen 3 can boast the more powerful RTX Pro GPU, but also the bigger battery (90 Wh), more storage and an SD card reader - it is actually the most affordable ThinkPad laptop with this feature of the whole lineup.
In terms of screens, buyers the choice between two WUXGA IPS displays or a 4K-WQUXGA OLED panel - all of which share the same 16:10 16-inch size. Another more rare feature among ThinkPad workstations is 5G/LTE, which only the expensive P16 Gen 3 and the ThinkPad P16v Gen 3 offer.
