A problem with Tesla's automatic window reversal system is affecting 1.1 million Model 3, Model Y and Model S/X cars. Since the windows may start pinching a hand or other obstacle before they reverse down, Tesla will issue an OTA fix in November.

Tesla is recalling over a million vehicles of the 2017-2022 Model 3, the 2020-2021 Model Y, and the 2021-2022 Models S and X crops for faulty automatic window reversal system.

It seems that the obstacle sensor fails to send commands to their motors to stop moving on time, so a "closing window may exert excessive force by pinching a driver or passenger before retracting, increasing the risk of injury," says Tesla's filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

There haven't been any power window-related injuries recorded so far, or complaints filed by customers with the NHTSA, and Tesla discovered the potential issue during safety testing procedures. Nevertheless, it has logged the "pinching power windows" fault under a recall filing affecting the aforementioned models.

The issue seems to be software-related, rather than anything to do with the sensors, motors, or other power window hardware kit components. This is why Tesla will be issuing an over-the-air update to remedy a situation the vast majority of its customers weren't even aware of.

"Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 15, 2022," says Tesla, and they "may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752" equipped with the number for the recall - SB-22-00-013 - if they want to know more about the faulty automatic window reversal system recall.
