Stellantis has confirmed its plans to double the number of Fiat New 500 electric vehicle units it produces this year compared to last year. However, CEO Carlos Tavares has also stated that the company is facing parts shortages, which has put this target at risk. The electric 500 remains popular in Europe, second only to Tesla vehicles.

Stellantis has confirmed that it hopes to double its production of the Fiat New 500. The model was the best-selling mass-market battery electric car in Europe from January to July. The electric car is also currently the third most popular overall in the BEV category, behind the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. The company’s CEO, Carlos Tavares, has said Stellantis could even triple its manufacturing volume; however, parts shortages could prevent this move.

Tavares stated that Stellantis was limited by semiconductor and other parts shortages, though battery packs remained readily available. The company aims to produce 90,000 units this year, growing from the 46,925 Fiat 500 EVs manufactured in 2021. The electric car is partly popular thanks to its competitive price, starting from €29,400 (~US$28,485) to £29,435 (~US$31,962). The entry-level EV has a 70 kW 95 hp motor and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph (~62 mph) in 9.5 seconds. The vehicle produces up to 220 Nm of torque and can travel for up to 257 km (~160 miles) on a single charge.

This announcement about the production levels of the Fiat New 500 came as Stellantis revealed plans to increase production of the electrified dual-clutch transmissions (eDCT), used in its hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, at its Mirafiori factory. This uplift will help the company to achieve its goal of doubling its yearly revenue to 300 billion euros (US$291 billion) by 2030.
