A slightly camouflaged Tesla Model Y L has turned up in Germany, with keen observers snapping photos of the extended SUV during testing. The new version was recently discovered in a regulatory filing and subsequently officially revealed in China. However, the European sighting suggests that a launch on the continent is in the works.
The 6-seat Model Y L is about 7 inches longer than the original version. Tesla has extended the wheelbase, making the third row seats more comfortable for adults. The car will have a 2+2+2 seating layout, with captain’s chairs occupying the second row.
The Model Y L was spotted at a charging station close to the iconic Nürburgring in Nürburg, Germany. The prototype had wheels that clearly matched those included in Tesla’s filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Tesla is expected to start offering the Model Y L in China in September, with production reportedly already underway at its Shanghai factory. However, with a prototype appearing at the Nürburgring, where carmakers often test their future releases destined for Europe, customers on the continent could become hopeful. There are speculations that Tesla would also manufacture the Model Y L at the Fremont Factory and Giga Texas, meaning US buyers might also get their hands on the electric SUV.
The Tesla Model Y L, according to information provided to the MIIT, features an 82 kWh NMC battery supplied by LG, with an estimated driving range of 751 km (approximately 466.55 miles). However, customers outside China should note that the estimate is based on the CLTC, which is typically more optimistic than the EPA and WLTP used in the US and Europe, respectively.
