Steam launch: Cult classic RPG returns with revamped combat and new content, debuts to strong "Very Positive" reviews
OFF began life in 2008 as a freeware RPG Maker project by Belgian creator Mortis Ghost (and the Unproductive Fun Time collective). Now, it has launched on Steam as a modernized remaster that has new content while also sticking to its unsettling tone and aesthetic. Published by Fangamer, it officially released on Aug 15, 2025. The store description frames the adventure around "the Batter," a player-directed purifier guided by a cat named The Judge through haunted zones.
This 2025 version isn’t a basic port. The official site confirms an all‑new battle system, newly designed areas, and hidden bosses by Mortis Ghost, plus a revised localization and some quality‑of‑life upgrades such as checkpoints, a hint system, and accessibility options. It also features a new soundtrack with contributions from Morusque and Toby Fox. OFF is available now on Steam and Nintendo Switch digitally, with a physical Switch edition slated for Q1 2026. There's partial controller support available for the game as well.
Since its first appearance in 2008, OFF built a reputation for its barebone visuals, oppressive atmosphere, and fourth‑wall twists. The new launch is just an extension of the same: players still command the Batter on a "sacred mission" to "purify" a decaying world of specters, as they confront a whole lot of moral ambiguity along the way.
