GTA fans with a taste for medieval themes and dark humor should take note: Rustler is currently 80% off on Steam, priced at just $5 instead of the usual $25.

Rustler was released on August 31, 2021, after several months in Early Access on Steam. Developed by the Polish studio Jutsu Games – also known for 911 Operator – the game was published by Modus Games and Games Operators. Branding itself as “Grand Theft Horse,” it offers a medieval twist on the classic GTA formula, complete with dark humor, rapping monks, horse drifting and all kinds of anachronistic absurdity. The gameplay closely mirrors the GTA experience, though instead of a third-person view, Rustler uses a top-down perspective.

You play as Guy, a less-than-heroic peasant determined to enter the knights' tournament – not out of bravery, but in pursuit of fame, fortune and a healthy dose of chaos. The game unfolds in an open world that feels more like a filthy medieval meme than a faithful historical setting. You’ll stumble from one absurd mission to the next, with the German gaming magazine GameStar praising the clever mission design and over-the-top humor. There’s no shortage of variety either, with plenty to keep you busy beyond the main story, including brawls, horse taxi jobs, rap battles and more.

GameStar describes Rustler as “classic GTA gameplay in the Middle Ages” mixed with crude humor and countless pop culture references. However, the game didn’t escape criticism, receiving a modest overall score of 65. Among the downsides noted were vague mission objectives, clunky controls and a generally weak presentation with sparse detail and even a few spelling errors. Replay value is also limited – after about 10 hours, most players will have seen everything the game has to offer, and there’s no multiplayer mode to extend the fun. Critics on Metacritic echoed this sentiment, awarding the game a Metascore of 65. User reviews on Steam paint a slightly more favorable picture, with 79% of roughly 1,000 players giving positive feedback. So while Rustler has its flaws, GTA fans with a taste for offbeat humor might still find it worth checking out.

80% discount on Steam

Rustler usually costs around $25 on Steam, but right now it's available for just about $5 thanks to an 80% discount. If you miss this deal, don’t worry – according to SteamDB, the game often drops to this price, most recently during the Summer Sale. The current offer runs until July 31. And for anyone who enjoys gaming on the go, Rustler is Steam Deck verified and runs smoothly on Valve’s handheld, which you can find on Amazon for about $460.
