Steel Division 2 is a real-time strategy game rooted in historical events. While its predecessor, Steel Division: Normandy 44, focused on the Western Front, this sequel shifts to the Eastern Front of World War II, centering on the massive Soviet offensive known as Operation Bagration. Players can expect a mix of turn-based campaign management and dynamic real-time battles.
In the "Army General" campaign, players command their forces across large-scale maps in turn-based phases, with each turn representing half a day. When opposing forces meet, battles unfold in real time. The campaign maps are modeled at a 1:1 scale, covering areas as large as 90 by 60 miles. German gaming magazine PCGames praised Steel Division 2 for its exceptionally realistic real-time combat. With more than 600 historically accurate units, authentic damage modeling, realistic line-of-sight mechanics and lifelike vehicle behavior, the game is clearly built for dedicated strategy enthusiasts. The reviewers also highlighted the detailed visuals, noting that authentic battlefields and immersive combat create a convincing World War II atmosphere.
The scope of Steel Division 2 is impressive: alongside the eight divisions available to owners of its predecessor Steel Division: Normandy 44, the base game alone offers 18 divisions, with more added through DLCs. However, PCGames criticized the steep learning curve. Without a tutorial or introductory missions, new players may struggle to get started, and even veterans can feel overwhelmed – largely due to the game’s demanding micromanagement systems. While this complexity may deter casual gamers, it’s exactly what makes the game appealing to hardcore strategy fans.
Overall, Steel Division 2 earned a solid 8 out of 10 from PCGames, with the verdict: “A brilliant strategy game.” On Metacritic, reception has been more mixed – critics gave it a score of 73, while users rated it 7.2. On Steam, the game has over 9,000 reviews, with 79% of players leaving a positive rating.
