Sony has released the IER-EX15C wired USB-C earbuds, with a sustainable battery-free design to help reduce their environmental impact.
Lithium ion batteries require mining of lithium metal, which destroys the landscape and uses much of the fresh water supply around mines. The disposal of spent batteries is problematic due to the lack of available technologies and capacity to recycle them, causing further environmental damage due to leaking spent cells in landfills.
The IER-EX15C earbuds are fully powered by the connected audio source, eliminating batteries as a source of toxic waste. They also run as long as the source can power them, eliminating worries of limited runtimes and recharging wait times.
The earbuds include a multifunction button unit with an omni-directional microphone along its 1.2 m (3.9 ft.) textured cable, allowing for control of calls and music. A built-in cable adjuster takes up any slack. XL, M, and XS eartips are provided for a personalized fit of the small earbuds, which house 5 mm drivers with a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
The Sony IER-EX15C USB-C earbuds have an MSRP of $29.99 and are available now on Amazon US in black, blue, pink, and white. They are scheduled for release in Japan on October 10, 2025.
