Sony VAIO F Series

I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’m a Sony fan-boy, but I have been fond of the brand for many years having owned and reviewed several of their products across a wide range of applications. These things aside, the F-Series is cheaper than the Dell XPS equivalent, and when you throw in the added Blu-Ray drive it makes for a great buy if your considering a laptop for gaming, video, graphics and entertainment purposes.

When we imagine what an ideal high-end laptop should be, most of us have a laundry list: a great look and feel; a big, high-res screen; Blu-ray; and, most likely, some pretty good graphics under the hood. With great processing power, Blu-ray, and a 1080p display for $1,349, the Sony Vaio VPCF115FM/B is one of the best high-end all-around laptops we've seen in a while.

The Sony Vaio F is a solid mid-tier Sony notebook that is well built with good material at a reasonable price. The high-end Intel Core i7 processor and dedicated graphics make this notebook a good candidate for audio and video users and developers. The built-in Blu-ray player is a nice bonus for a laptop that starts at $1,000. The 16.4" is more portable than the larger 17"-18.4" beasts like the Qosmio and the Sony is certainly a lot thinner than many larger notebooks. The screen isn’t very color saturated and you need to pay extra for the 1080p native display. Color flashing in Battlefield Bad Company 2 isn’t a good sign, and we can’t say it won’t happen in other games since we can’t try them all. If you are a serious gamer, you should consider the GeForce GT 330M option.

Sony has introduced the Vaio VPCF11S1E as "Ideal for HD Home Cinema", with "cinema-style surround sound". The Sony Vaio VPCF11S1E is configured to handle all activities, especially video. We are however slightly disappointed by a few details which are not up to the high levels of peformance of the processor (insufficient contrast and hard drive not up to the mark).

There is really only one reason why the Sony VAIO VPC-F121GX might be your next media center laptop: It's one of the lightest ones available if you absolutely need quad-core processing on the road. Otherwise, the drab design, subpar graphics, and small battery aren't worth the $1,200 Costco special. You're better off customizing a Dell Studio 17 to your specific needs or go all out with the Acer Aspire AS8943G-6782.

Sony's VAIO F Series has plenty of grunt under the hood and lots of style all round. Its Full HD screen is bright and vibrant and handles fine colour gradations very well. It's perfect for photographers, designers and videographers who require a professional laptop for their work. 3D Vaio. Sony Vaio's leap into the 3D world gives reason for excitement thanks to F21's perfect full-HD display and its undimmed 3D picture. The level of craftsmanship and choice of materials used for the case don't quite meet the demands of the premium sector, however.

There's a lot to like about the Vaio F, and very little to dislike. It's a powerful laptop that'll handle just about anything you'll throw at it, from video to games to 3D, to day-to-day work. There's more than enough power, and the 1080p screen is one of the best we've seen. Even Sony's idiosyncratic design makes sense, with the Vaio F a striking example of PC design. While it is a little on the heavy side that's only to be expected and you're likely to keep a machine like this on a desk rather than on your lap.

Tech specs aside, the proof is in the playing, and Vaio’s frame rate seemed to be best for new games and worst for the oldest. In the cut-and-thrust of 3D gameplaying, as well as 3D movie-watching and 3D picture fun, the VPCF21Z1E/BI is not just great, but terrific. Whether it’s £1,799-worth of terrific, compared to a 3D-enabled tower system, depends on how much value you put on its luggable portability.

Sony has a reputation for producing expensive computers in its Vaio range, and the Vaio VPCF21Z1E/BI is a more powerful computer than most we review, hence the £1800 price tag. This led to a rather odd quirk, which was that the screen sits an inch or so lower than it might on another laptop, which meant we constantly found our eyes looking an inch too high up - not a big problem, but a disconcerting one.

Amazingly, in spite of the gigawatts of power it must be slurping up, barely a decibel escapes from the inky black case, and the little hum that does will easily be covered up by your popcorn munching and movie soundtracks.. The speakers are fair enough considering it’s a laptop but to do that 3D justice you should hook up to a pair of cans or a sound system that’s equal to the impressive internal sound hardware. Unquestionably, the F-series does deliver. The price tag may be as hefty as the laptop itself, but its Tardis-like ability to cram a believable extra dimension into everything you watch is indistinguishable from magic.

Master of contrast. Premium range or low-cost Full HD? The 16.4 incher from the F series can already be yours for 875 euros. However, we can only confirm that the higher priced test device has superb colors. Is the F22 suitable as a workplace and HD studio?

60% Sony VAIO F-Series (VPCF233FX/B)

Performance issues aside, the Sony VAIO F Series isn't a bad buy. Sure, you'll have to contend with Sony's extra software (such as its VAIO Gate dock), and the FireWire port is weirdly located on the front of the computer, but otherwise the VAIO F Series is a decent laptop for multimedia playback and basic tasks. I don't love the design, but other people might. Plus, it's pretty portable for a desktop replacement.

As with other Sony notebooks we’ve tested recently, the F Series’ software bundle is impressive, especially given the price. In addition to the Sony multimedia creation suite mentioned earlier, you get the handy VAIO Gate application-launch utility, a customizable “ribbon” that drops down from the top of the screen to let you open applications or files with a single click.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

NVIDIA GeForce 310M: The GeForce 310M is the successor of the GeFore G210M and based on the same chip with very similar clock rates (shader speed +30MHz to 1530MHz).

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M: The Nvidia GeForce GT 330M is the successor of the GT 230M and technically just a slightly higher clocked GT 240M (but it should still maintain the power envelope of the GT 230M as the naming suggests).

NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M: Successor of the GeForce GT 335M featuring DirectX 11 support and based on the GF108 chip.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M:

Mid-range graphics card based on the GT 435M chip (GF108) with higher clock rates and DDR3 support.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

740QM:

The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

2670QM: Fast Quad-core processor clocked at 2.2-3.1 GHz based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

Intel Core i3:

350M:

The Core i3-350M is technically a Core i5-430M without the Turbo Boost overlocking feature. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.26 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

Intel Core i5:

520M:

The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

16.00:

This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.4 kg:

3.3 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

77.84%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.

» Further information can be found in our Notebook Purchase Guide.
