Lifestyle Statement. What exactly makes Sony's EA-Series more stylish than other laptops? The 3D-effect finish? How about the glaring colors? Has Sony taken a page from someone else's book with their "Lifestyle" branding? Find out more in the following test!

For some, the mere sight of that four-letter VAIO logo is enough to inspire irrational desire. But in a world where Sony’s brand cachet alone can loosen wallets, the latest addition to its E Series family, the 14in VAIO VPCEA1S1E/L, is the laptop equivalent of Marmite. Sony’s smallest VAIO E Series comes in colours that inevitably polarise opinion, but if the styling suits, it's a great little laptop.

This is another good laptop from Sony that lives up to its reputation for good quality design. It also benefits from an excellent display, but for the money its performance doesn't quite live up to expectations.

Back in the spring we reviewed the first of Sony's midrange Vaio E line, and we liked its combination of Core i3 processor, solid design, and an extremely comfortable keyboard and touch pad. Comfortable, feature-packed, and with an eye-catching design, the Sony Vaio EA24FM/W and its combination of Blu-ray and Intel Wireless Display make it an affordable multimedia winner.

The Sony VAIO VPC-EA36FMW laptop serves up a generous helping of entertainment features, including Blu-ray and Intel WiDi, along with WiMax connectivity, for a fair price. Its fit and finish are wonderful, but users will be less enthused about its battery life and tinny speakers.

Performance with our model, which again wasn't suitable for 3D gaming because of the integrated graphics processor, was excellent for regular computing tasks. Again, if you want to do 3D gaming, make sure you choose a more upgraded customization. Battery life is rated at 3.5-hours with a standard capacity battery and we were able to get exactly that, which is a little lesser than we'd hoped from a portable computer like this one.

With head-turning color options and good overall performance, the VAIO EA is a compelling all-purpose laptop that's easy to take with you. We also like the gesture control software and that you get a Blu-ray drive for $799. We just wish the battery lasted longer and the speakers were louder. Those looking for more graphics oomph would probably prefer the 14-inch Asus U45Jc or Samsung Q430-11, but overall the VAIO EA is definitely worthy of your attention.

The Sony VAIO VPC-EA3UFX/BJC ($749.99 list), at Costco, combines the performance and reliability of the VAIO line with some bonus features provided by Costco. The performance ranks along side some of the best value laptops on the market, and Costco throws in an extended warranty and technical support, making this a package that Costco shoppers won't want to pass up.

If you're e looking for a mainstream laptop that doesn't look like every other mainstreeam laptop, the Sony VAIO VPC-EA46FM/V is for you. Whether its bright violet design is a plus or a minus is strictly a matter of taste, but there's no denying its solid performance and robust feature set. A more powerful graphics solution would be a welcome upgrade, though. If a mainstream laptop with some graphics chops is what you're after, the Asus U41JF-A1 is a better choice.

Sony's Vaio E series VPCEA3S1E is designed to be an all-round 14-inch laptop that's as suited to playing movies at home as it is to word processing on the go. The Sony Vaio EA3S1E is a great looking laptop that's comfortable to use and has a speedy processor. It's only let down by its weak battery life and sub-par gaming performance.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145: The 5145 is a renamed Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with slightly higher clock rates. Therefore it has no DirectX 11 support and a performance between the 4570 and 5470.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470: Entry level DirectX 11 chip with GDDR5 support but only 80 shader cores. Supports Eyefinity (up to 4 monitors) and 8-ch HD audio over HDMI. Performance on par with the old GeForce 8600M GT.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i3:
330M:
The Core i3-330M is a slower clocked 350M and therefore also lacks the Turbo Boost feature and clocks with max. 2.13 GHz. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
350M:
The Core i3-350M is technically a Core i5-430M without the Turbo Boost overlocking feature. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.26 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
370M: The Core i3-370M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.4 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
380M: The Core i3-380M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.53 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Pentium:
P6000: The Pentium P6000 is an entry level CPU based on the Arrandale core. Compared to the Celeron P4500, the P6000 offers a bit better performance due to the faster System Bus and an increased Level 3 cache. However, VT-x is not available for the P6000.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2 kg:
2.7 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
77.91%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
» Further information can be found in our Notebook Purchase Guide.
