Small laptops have become synonymous with low-cost Netbooks, but Sony's Vaio TT reminds us why some ultraportables can cost almost 10 times as much (hint: the 256GB SSD helps).

If you can do without the dual solid state drives and Blu-ray drive, you can pick up the VAIO TT for a far more reasonable $2,094, although you’ll have to settle for a slower 1.2-GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. If you’re shrugging off the recession, and you want to be able to brag that you own an ultraportable with Blu-ray capabilities and one of the largest SSD capacities available, the Sony VAIO VGN-TT198UBX will satisfy. It offers butter-smooth performance and lots of endurance. In general, though, we prefer the Sony VAIO Z series, because it’s only about half a pound heavier while offering discrete graphics and a larger screen and keyboard.

Sony's take on the ultraportable market is represented by the Sony VAIO VGN-TT11WN, an 11in screen notebook weighing at just over 1.3kg. The Sony VAIO VGN-TT11WN has got a very high price tag, but this is partially explained by the inclusion of an internal 3G modem for mobile internet access. For the money, we’d expect first-rate build quality and performance, yet the Sony VAIO VGN-TT11WN fails to deliver on the former, while startling us in some respects with the latter. Screen quality and battery life are both unparalleled by any other notebook we've tested.

Sony is well known for making highly desirable ultraportable notebooks, with the TZ11 range in particular being held in the number one spot by many people. Now Sony has brought out an updated model range, the TT, an ultraportable which is so compact that at first glance looks like a netbook. A stylish ultraportable with superb build quality and a good feature set, but for the hefty price we would expect to see an even better set of features, i.e. more USB ports, a better webcam and more powerful graphics.

If you need an ultra-portable notebook and find the 13.3in alternatives, like the ThinkPad X300, too much to handle the Sony VAIO TT is still the best option out there. Yet, despite its manifest qualities, it's an option that comes at too high a cost; delivering mediocre performance compared to its price point. Thus, unless Sony makes its pricing a little more realistic or money is simply no object for you, we couldn't recommend it without pause.

The VAIO TT really does offer road warriors that perfect mixture of performance, battery and portability. As well as the Bluetooth and WiFi draft-n, Sony offer a Sprint EV-DO Rev.A WWAN option (for a $59.99 monthly fee); work while you travel and then, when you’re at the hotel, plug the TT in to the TV and watch a movie rather than paying for the usual lousy selection. Vista is a chore but, courtesy of the SSDs, it’s at least manageable. What might be less so is the price. Most people would call the entry level TT expensive; the superlative-spec VGN-TT190UBX topples that over into astronomical.

While the high price of the Sony VAIO VGN-TT11WN/B puts it into an elite group of ownership, its style, resilience, battery life and features make it one of the best ultraportables we've seen. This may well prove to be the perfect laptop for the frequent business traveller.

Sony's TZ-range of ultraportable laptops has long been a favourite in PC Pro's offices, but its reign on our A-list was finally brought to an end by Lenovo's stunning ThinkPad X300. Now, however, we've laid our hands on Sony's latest update to the TZ range, the all-new TT. It's gorgeous, but it can't match Sony's own Z-series for sheer ultraportable excellence

Sony is well known for its premium product ranges and the TT series of Vaio notebooks, unveiled in October, is certainly an indication that it puts quality over price. While our recent review of the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 highlighted the case of a netbook that wanted to be a notebook, the TT series takes the opposite approach, cramming a fully featured notebook into a form factor the same size as most of today's netbooks. The chassis measures just 200mm x 279mm and is 23.5mm deep at its thinnest point. The Sony Vaio TT is small, light and portable while still packing enough power for almost all of today's applications. However, the price tag could prove offputting to many buyers.

The Sony VAIO VGN-TT190 is sub-3-pound laptop that houses a Blu-ray drive and dual 128GB solid-state drives (SSDs). However, there are a few drawbacks, including a superhigh price, that keep me from getting too excited about the TT190.

No question, the Vaio TT is a stunning machine: small, capable, supremely portable and very well connected. But you pay a lot for these benefits at a time when netbooks - even ones with on-board HSDPA - can do much the same job for a fraction of the cost. Yes, with less horsepower; yes, with a lot less battery life. But it's hard to argue with the saving you'd make over the expensive Sony.

It costs more than Sony’s own Z-Series laptops, which are only 200g heavier, boast improved ergonomics and still manage to trump the TT with dual graphics chipsets, vastly improved performance and fine battery life. The undeniable allure of the TT’s tinier, curvy figure may tempt some, but the excellence of Sony’s own stablemate puts it in the shade.

Sony's VAIO TT ultraportables look for a more compact design that isn't much bigger than modern netbook computers, but with the full features one would expect from a traditional laptop computer. With its very compact dimensions, the system is still able to perform quite well even if it it is held back some by the memory choice. All of this performance and size comes at a very high cost that is double some 13.3-inch laptops and nearly five times the cost of a netbook.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

76.35%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
