Samsung announces Series 5 Ultrabooks

Teaser
Samsung makes a splash in the Ultrabook market with two upcoming systems, one with even discrete graphics and an integrated optical disc drive

Add Samsung to the growing list of Ultrabook manufacturers as the South Korean conglomerate has officially announced its entry to the market with new ultrathin Series 5 notebooks.

According to SammyHub.com, the Series 5 Ultrabook will be coming in two sizes as 13-inch and 14-inch models. The 14-inch model will include what can be considered the first ever features for an Ultrabook, such as discrete graphics (Radeon HD 7550M) and even a built-in optical disc drive. Otherwise, the notebook will reportedly come standard with a Core i5 CPU, 1366x768 resolution anti-reflective display, hybrid SSD and HDD options and up to 8GB RAM. The source claims VGA, HDMI, Ethernet and USB ports will be present as well.

Meanwhile, the smaller 13-inch notebook may ditch the optical drive and discrete graphics for the integrated Intel HD 3000, but as a result would shed enough fat to be just 14.9mm (0.586 inches) thick and weigh 1.4kg (3.08 pounds). The notebook is expected to carry the same connectivity options as its larger sibling, but other distinguishing features are still unknown.

The Samsung Ultrabook duo will both launch sometime before the end of this month in South Korea, says The Verge, for the equivalent of $1300 and $1345 for the 13-inch and 14-inch model, respectively. We’ll definitely keep an eye out for these Ultrabooks (along with the dozens of others) this coming CES 2012.
