Chants of Sennaar is a colorful single-player puzzle game that won Best Indie Game at the 2024 New York awards and has an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam with more than 10k reviews. The game is currently 40% off, down to its lowest recorded price of $11.99.

Inspired by the myth of the Tower of Babel, Chants of Sennaar tasks you with exploring a mythical tower where people, isolated by fear and mistrust, no longer speak to each other.

You are the Traveller, prophesied to restore balance to this colorful world. To do this, you must delve into the cultures of various inhabitants in the tower and solve linguistic puzzles as you piece together five interconnected languages.

The map you explore is huge and guided by stunning art direction that makes every frame feel like a painting. The puzzles involve piecing together various glyphs, symbols, and words to decipher a language and to gain a greater understanding of how to use them.

Each level of the tower houses a distinct caste, divided between Devotees, Warriors, Bards, Alchemists, and Anchorites. As your knowledge improves, the cultures connect in surprising ways, and your end goal is to restore the link between the people who've grown weary of each other.

The game's art style is another standout, utilizing Moebius-inspired minimal lines and vibrant flat colors for a unique cel-shaded look. The audio makes heavy use of culturally grounded instruments such as harps, woodwinds, and horns to create a distinct soundtrack that enhances immersion.

Critical reception and User reviews

The game has garnered more than 10,000 user reviews on Steam, earning an overall "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating. Sites like Eurogamer and Polygon praised the game's unique approach to puzzles and gorgeous art. Although they noted that the stealth sections of the game and the difficulty of some puzzles occasionally disrupt the otherwise excellent pacing.

A few user reviews on Steam also noted "the excessive hand-holding" and wished there was a difficulty option for players who don't want the game to be overly easy. Despite this 98% of 10,329 reviews still rated the game positively overall.

According to Steamdb, the game is currently at its lowest recorded price of $11.99 until September 15.
