OnePlus has parted ways with Hasselblad for its latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 flagship phone. The OnePlus 15 is set to sport the in-house DetailMax Engine instead. While the smartphone is expected to feature a somewhat underwhelming camera setup, the newly shared samples do look promising.
These camera samples confirm that the OnePlus 15 will feature an 85 mm telephoto sensor with an f/2.8 aperture. To compare, OnePlus's last-gen flagship phone (512 GB curr. $929.99 on Amazon) features a periscope sensor with an f/2.6 aperture and a 73 mm equivalent focal length.
The longer focal length can be considered an upgrade for portrait photography, but the smaller aperture would mean that the OnePlus 15's telephoto will be slightly less capable of capturing bright shots in low-light conditions. Of course, in broad daylight, the difference between the two would not be noticeable.
Moreover, the in-house DetailMax Engine, which is branded as Lumo in China, appears to be doing a pretty good job in terms of keeping the colors punchy and retaining the details of the shots. The newly shared samples also have captures from the primary camera of the OnePlus 15.
As these captures reveal, the primary sensor will sport a 24 mm equivalent focal length and f/1.8 aperture. This, again, is a downgrade when compared to the f/1.6 main camera of the OnePlus 13. Rumor has it that the sensor size is also smaller, but the samples do show captures with a good amount of detail.
It's also worth mentioning that the OnePlus 15 isn't primarily marketed for photography. Instead, the Find X9 Pro from the sister brand Oppo is the one that's being heavily promoted for its camera capabilities. Another thing to note is that it's always a good idea to take these camera samples with a pinch of salt, as companies tend not to be fully honest with these.
