Motorola has introduced its alternative to the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro. While the Moto X40 features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and a 165 Hz display, Motorola has priced the eventual Edge 40 Pro for CNY 3,399 (~US$489), undercutting the Xiaomi 13 by nearly US$100 at current exchange rates.

Motorola has presented the Moto X40, a smartphone that it is believed to be the Chinese version of the Edge 40 Pro. Launching alongside the Moto G53, the Moto X40 is Motorola's first smartphone based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Qualcomm's latest flagship chipset, and Android 13. The Moto X40 contains other high-end hardware too, such as LPDDR5X RAM, UFS 4.0 flash storage and a 4,600 mAh battery that supports 125 W fast charging. For reference, the latter can also be recharged at up to 15 W wirelessly and provides the same wattage to other devices via reverse wireless charging.

According to Motorola, the Moto X40 cools its powerful hardware with a 3,002 mm² vapour chamber, contributing to the device's 197 g overall weight. The Moto X40 is also IP68 certified and contains four cameras:

  • 50 MP primary (Omnivision OV50A)
  • 50 MP ultra-wide (Samsung ISOCELL JN1)
  • 12 MP telephoto - 2x optical zoom (Sony IMX663)
  • 60 MP front-facing (Omnivision OV60A)

Additionally, Motorola has included a 6.67-inch OLED display that operates at 1080p and 165 Hz. While 1080p is a relatively low resolution for a modern high-end smartphone, the quad-curved glass protecting it should deliver flagship looks. The display has an in-display fingerprint scanner too, as well as a punch-hole for the device's front-facing camera, 10-bit colour support and HDR10+ support.

The Moto X40 starts at CNY 3,399 (~US$489) with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. In other words, the Moto X40 is significantly cheaper than the Xiaomi 13, despite offering comparable hardware. The same goes for the Xiaomi 13 Pro, which starts at CNY 4,999 (~US$719). Alternatively, Motorola offers 256 GB and 512 GB storage variants, plus 12 GB of RAM options. At launch, the Moto X40 comes in black and blue colourways and will be orderable from December 22 at the following prices; a global release date remains pending.

  • 8 GB of RAM/128 GB of storage - CNY 3,399 (~US$489)
  • 8 GB of RAM/256 GB of storage - CNY 3,699 (~US$532)
  • 12 GB of RAM/256 GB of storage - CNY 3,999 (~US$575)
  • 12 GB of RAM/512 GB of storage - CNY 4,299 (~US$619)
