With an incredibly powerful GPU, loads of RAM and a lighting fast quad-SSD RAID configuration the MSI GT72 Dominator Pro is gaming powerhouse. Programs load nearly instantaneously, and the 8 GB of VRAM ensure that the laptop will be able to handle the next generation of games with optimal performance.

Objectively, there was never anything wrong with the original GT70 Dominator. Sure, I grew tired of its design, but it still featured top-notch internals, excellent speakers, a solid keyboard and a great screen. The GT72 took all of those elements and wrapped them in a new skin.

The $2,999 GT72 2QE leaves no doubt; it is the fastest gaming laptop we’ve ever reviewed, thanks almost exclusively to its NVIDIA GTX 980M and its class-leading performance. But let’s not also forget the outright absurdity of its storage solution: a quad-SSD RAID 0 array, which is something we don’t recall having seen since the days of the Sony VAIO Z.

Regardless of which model you choose, the GT72 is an excellent gaming laptop. Great build quality is matched with plenty of scope for future upgrades, and Nvidia’s powerhouse of a GPU is capable of smashing through most games without breaking sweat. The only thing holding us back from rewarding it with a Recommended award is that we haven’t been able to test the version with an IPS display – if it turns out to be any good, there’s every chance our credit card balance will be looking very unhealthy indeed.

It's also, unless you're captivated by its quad-SSD RAID array or superb sound, hard to recommend MSI's machine over the $500-less-expensive Asus Republic of Gamers G751 we tested last month. Not only do we like the Asus' keyboard and screen a little better, it posted slightly higher frame rates in our all-important gaming tests. Perhaps the best compromise, as we said, is another, less costly Dominator Pro configuration.

The GT72 Dominator Pro offers some of the best performance I've seen from a gaming laptop. The $2,999 notebook has a searing-fast hard drive, excellent audio quality, a customizable keyboard and an Nvidia 900 series GPU and Core i7 PU. I just wish the screen were as good as the rest of the system.

At 17.3 inches, the GT72's 1920 x 1080 screen should be large enough for media streaming sessions. Also, thanks to its insanely powerful components, this rig should easily withstand whatever the next few years can throw at it. It's biggest weakness, though, is its form factor. The GT72 is a great gaming machine, for sure, but it's also a hulking piece of plastic with a 2 (and a half) hour battery life.

Our conclusion for the 2QE is pretty much the same as for the 2PE: the GT72 Dominator Pro is an excellent gaming machine with top-notch performance courtesy this time of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M graphics card. But, again, you'll be playing your favourite games on a terribly calibrated display.

Nvidia's GeForce GTX 980M has raised the bar for single-GPU performance in a laptop PC. Taking full advantage of the efficient Maxwell architecture, the best-in-class chip arrives as a go-to solution for manufacturers wanting to create premium systems aimed squarely at enthusiast gamers.

Model:
More and more gaming laptops aim at hard core gamers, but the MSI GT72 2QE-207UK Dominator Pro still manages to stand out within this extremely competitive market. The GT72 might share the same black color theme as the GT70, but that's where the similarity ends. Its design is a lot more streamline and stylish than its predecessor's.
The huge 17.3 inch display features a standard 1080p resolution, which is easy on the eyes whether your are reading or gaming. The ventilation is excellent and will keep the laptop relatively cool compared to other gaming laptops. The release of the next generation Nvidia graphic cards, the GTX 980M in particular, set the new standard for the new generation of gaming laptops. This is what sets the MSI GT72 ahead in terms of raw power to run the latest graphic intensive games on max settings. The Intel Core i7 processor has a relatively lower clock speed but can be overclocked for major performance boost by experienced PC user.
One of the major drawbacks is battery life. Like most other gaming laptops, using powerful hardware means draining the battery a lot faster. There is an option to cap frame rates to boost battery life, but do not expect it to last more than a couple of hours during moderate use.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M:
Fast high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
4710HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.5 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.5 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
3.8 kg:
Only a few laptops are in this weight class because the mobility is rather limited due to the high weight.
MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
77.63%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
