Reports suggest that the production version of the Kia EV5 will be unveiled in August at the Chengdu Motor Show. The concept of the SUV was unveiled in March and it is expected to go on sale in the country later this year. The predicted price of the EV5 could make it a strong competitor for the Tesla Model Y.

According to recent reports, the Kia EV5 will be unveiled at the Chengdu Motor Show in China. The Korean Car Blog notes that the new electric vehicle will go on show on August 25, with reservations in the country due to open in November. The car is estimated to start at 50 million won (~US$39,000).

Reports claim that the lower price of the EV5 is possible thanks to a 400V system, rather than the 800V used for other electric Hyundai Motor Group models. While it has been suggested that the vehicle will be sold in other markets, Kia has yet to confirm a release date. A lithium iron phosphate battery is anticipated for the Chinese edition, with an NCM battery used in other markets.

The EV5 concept was unveiled in March; as we have seen with other Kia EVs, the interior of the production model will likely be significantly different to the concept, but the exterior will be essentially the same. Features of the EV5 concept include a Digital Tiger Face at the front with a Tiger Nose grille and Star Map lighting technology. Digital lighting is also used on the sides of the SUV, alongside an aerodynamic roof spoiler and an overall sculpted look. It remains to be seen how the Kia EV5 will compete with models such as the Tesla Model Y, with the new challenger’s price point likely to play a significant role in its success; for context, the Model Y currently starts at US$47,740.
