HP Spectre Pro x360 G1-H9W42EA

The HP Spectre Pro x360 G1 is not just another 2-in-1 convertible laptop. Its sleek and slim build is “designed to undergo MIL-STD 810G testing” according to HP. HP Spectre Pro 13 G1-X2F01EA

The HP Spectre Pro 13 is remarkable in many ways. For one, it is remarkably thin. Its alluring design makes one wonder how HP managed to scale down its high performance horsepower within such a limited, sleek frame. The exterior of the Spectre Pro is trimmed with dark ash and copper colors. Its dimensions measure at 32.5 x 22.94 x 1.04 cm and it weighs merely 1.16 kg. It is arguably one of the thinnest Intel Core-powered laptops around. The attention to detail is equally astounding with the internal piston hinge design complementing the overall professional finishing of this device. The innovative hyperbaric cooling system keeps the Spectre Pro from heating up sporadically but its efficiency is still a question due to its thin profile. Its built quality is surprisingly strong with very less body flexing despite being so thin. Users will be working not only in style with this laptop, but also with maximum performance as it is powered by the Intel Core i5-6200U with Intel HD Graphics 520. It runs on 8 GB RAM and has a 256 GB M2 SATA SSD. This kind of hardware is certainly not expected in a laptop this thin. Clearly HP has not compromised on the substance over style. With the Intel HD Graphics 520 system, visual displays are crisp and vibrant. Its 13.3-inch display is capable of displaying incredible Full HD visual (1920 x 1080 pixels). It is coated with IPS Corning Gorilla Glass which increases its durability yet in turn it renders the screen highly reflective. This is a problem when it is used in bright environment such as outdoors. Decked with a full-size island-style backlit keyboard, usability and typing will not be affected even under low-lighting conditions. Its touchpad is sensitive and responsive with multi-touch gestures enabled to support Windows 10 gestures. However, scrolling with 2 fingers can be a bit of a challenge and takes time to get used to. The Spectre Pro is also equipped with an array of connectivity, which includes 3 full-function USB Type-C ports, of which 2 offer Thunderbolt support, which makes high speed transfer and charging a given. The USB Type-C ports support data transfer, power delivery, DisplayPort 1.2 out and HDMI 1.4 out through dongles which are widely available in the market. However, these dongles can be on the pricey side and usually come with only 1 output port. There is no traditional USB port available for use on this device making those dongles a necessity rather than an option . Wireless connectivity is provided by a WiFi and Bluetooth combo adapter. The Spectre Pro delivers impressive sound quality with two Bang & Olufsen speakers as well as HP’s proprietary Noise Cancellation and Audio Boost systems. Battery life on this device remains average at slightly over 5 hours. It comes pre-installed with Windows 10 Pro 64. This laptop is definitely capable of performing more everyday tasks. It is remarkably built and decently priced. It may not be a Macbook Air rival but it is still a device to look out for. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

HP Spectre Pro 13

Can the HP Spectre Pro 13 go toe to toe with one of the high-powered MacBook Pros? Yes and no, with certain elements truly shining and others flattering to deceive. The design for one, is either something you’re immediately attracted to or slightly turned off by. Options like the Acer Swift 7 (R25 000) or Asus ZenBook 3 (R25 000) may be easier to live with from a design perspective.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

78.5%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
