Let it be said that the HP EliteBook 8740w really is a fantastic piece of hardware. It's fast, extremely flexible and capable, and boasts a healthy amount of expansion and potential upgrades. You can configure it with the fastest mobile workstation graphics on the market, the fastest quad core processor, and an obscene 32GB of DDR3. The 8740w is by any measure a lot of notebook..

NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800M:

Professional workstation graphics card with certified drivers for optimal CAD and DCC support. The Quadro FX 3800M is based on the GeForce GTX 280M core and when compared to the FX 3700M, the FX 3800M features higher clock speeds and is produced on a 55nm manufacturing process.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.  

840QM: The Core i7-840QM is a high-end quad core CPU for laptops that clocks due to the Turbo Mode from 1.86-3.2 GHz. Therefore, the processor combines the advantages of fast single core CPUs and slow quad-core CPUs. This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.
