The HP Compaq nx9420 may be a business machine but we found it a great machine for anyone to use. If you need to balance work with having a machine for the family too, this may well be the perfect choice. It’s a well-specified machine that isn’t too heavy considering the size of the screen.

HP’s Compaq nx9420 is designed for professionals who require a large display, top-notch security, and mobility around the office. Thanks to a powerful dual-core processor and souped-up graphics, this desktop replacement tackles any task. At a surprisingly light 7.4 pounds, the nx9420 might even make it home a few times a week. The 17-inch widescreen is stunning, assuring that you’ll never have to squint when plowing through spreadsheets or watching a DVD. The full-sized keyboard and numeric keypad worked quite well in our tests.

Absolutely packed with features, as well as the fastest Core Duo CPU available, the nx9420 is a great laptop. When you consider how much the HP Compaq nx9420 has crammed into it, its 44mm thickness is remarkable. Indeed, it's hard to find fault with any of the components HP has included in its latest flagship laptop. The TPM module, fingerprint reader, adaptive screen brightness and 1,680 x,1,050 widescreen 17in TFT all make this a machine with an almost endless list of possible applications. The nx9420 is powered by the 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo T2600, Intel's fastest Core Duo CPU. Combined with 1GB of RAM to run applications smoothly, the system charged through our benchmarks, producing a result of 1.13.

HP's new flagship business portable has a 17-inch WXGA screen and weighs 7.4 pounds, so it ranks among the lightest notebooks in its category. If no other surface is available, the HP Compaq nx9420 feels perfectly comfortable perched on your lap, huge screen and all. The nx9420's keyboard is terrific: Its mouse buttons are extremely comfortable because of their soft texture and ability to depress deeply. The separate numerical keypad is topped by a button that handily launches the Windows calculator. The notebook's battery life is above average at 3 hours, and its speed is excellent. Equipped with the fastest of Intel's new dual processing chips (the 2.16-GHz Core Duo T2600) and 1GB of RAM, the nx9420 earned a WorldBench 5 score of 101, one of the highest marks we've ever recorded for a portable.

Though plenty of 17-inch wide-screen laptops are on the market, the HP Compaq nx9420 is the only one of them from a major vendor that's designed specifically for large business and enterprise deployment. Starting at approximately $1,399, the nx9420 is a bit pricier than HP's consumer-focused siblings (the Pavilion dv8000 starts at $999), but it's also considerably more powerful; the base configuration features a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo T2300 processor. If you're looking for a laptop to replace your desktop PC at work and you prize screen size and security over portability and multimedia capability, the nx9420 is a good choice. If you can do with a slightly smaller, 15.4-inch wide-screen laptop, however, the field of choice is much larger and less expensive (see our top thin-and-lights for business).

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)

17.1": Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.
