Google Pixel 5a 5G launched with some surprising changes
Google has revealed the Pixel 5a 5G, officially called the Pixel 5a with 5G. As expected, the Pixel 5a 5G is similar to its predecessor, the Pixel 4a 5G. Google has stopped selling the Pixel 4a 5G, but the Pixel 4a is available as an unlocked device. It is unclear if Google will sell the Pixel 4a for the foreseeable future, though.
The Pixel 5a 5G has a 6.34-inch display that operates at 2,400 x 1,080 pixels in a 20:9 aspect ratio. Hence, the Pixel 5a 5G has the same 413 PPI density as the Pixel 4a 5G. Google has fit the device's 6.34-inch display in a 154.9 x 73.7 x 7.6 mm chassis, weighing in at 185 g. So, while the Pixel 5a 5G is taller and heavier than its predecessor, it is slightly narrower and thinner. Seemingly, the Pixel 5a 5G is heavier than its predecessor because of its metal body, a first for a Pixel a series device.
Likewise, Google continues to use Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and the same 8 MP front-facing camera hiding beneath a punch-hole. The Pixel 5a 5G retains the 12 MP and 16 MP rear-facing cameras from its predecessor, too. Surprisingly, the device lacks its predecessor's spectral and flicker sensor, also found on the Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL and Pixel 5. Google explains that the sensor allows a Pixel smartphone to adjust its camera's exposure to minimise banding, which the Pixel 5a 5G will be unable to do.
The Pixel 5a 5G has a 4,680 mAh battery though, the largest of any Pixel smartphone. While there is no wireless charging support, the Pixel 5a 5G is IP67 dust and water-resistant. Unsurprisingly, Google has re-used the Snapdragon 765G, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage from last year's model. Correspondingly, do not expect much of a performance difference between the Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5a 5G.
In short, the Pixel 5a 5G is a slightly cheaper, larger and heavier alternative to the Pixel 4a 5G. Increased heft is a good trade-off for better battery life, in our opinion. Unfortunately, the Pixel 5a 5G is only available in Japan and the US for JPY 51,700 and US$449, respectively. The device will begin shipping at the end of August.
