Unspectacular appearance The new Amilo PI 2515, made by the German/Japanese producer Fujitsu Siemens computers (FSC), doesen't take any risks regarding appearance. The plain but not ugly notebook Amilo Pi 2515 isn't an exception. Only the small Centrino Duo- and Vista-stickers indicate the modern technology inside this 15.4 inch notebook.

You don't always have to sacrifice quality or convenience when you opt for a budget notebook, as proven by the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 2515. The Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 2515 is a portable but robust machine, weighing 2.8kg, with a keyboard, buttons and track pad that are all sensibly sized and easy to use. The Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 2515 features support for Kensington Lock physical security devices and quick access keys for entering Silent Mode and launching Windows Media Player. Featuring onboard graphics powered by the Intel Graphic Media Accelerator X3100, we found that the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 2515's FEAR gaming frame refresh scores are low: 5fps (frames per second). Its 15.4in screen features BrilliantView Technology claimed to enhance brightness.

The FSC Amilo Pa 3553 is a stylish consumer laptop, and there's enough power and features to satisfy most users. The poor battery life and warm-running chassis definitely let it down, but it remains good value for money.

As long as you're not looking for the most powerful laptop at this price, the FSC Amilo Pi 3540 is a great choice. It's stylish and usable, with a great screen and multimedia capabilities. Just make sure you weigh up how important performance and battery life are to you before you buy.

The Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 3540 is a fairly average laptop with above-average looks. It doesn't excel in any particular area, but it is pretty affordable, so for that it earns our respect. However, if you're after a faster, lighter, longer-lasting -- albeit uglier -- Centrino 2 laptop, you'll be better off with the Samsung Q210.

This 17" desktop replacement is large and comfortable but flawed by poor performance. If the Amilo Pi 3625 featured a graphics card with dedicated video memory, it could have been a contender for an award. As it doesn't, multimedia performance is too low, which is a shame because the great screen and keyboard make this laptop a bit of a missed opportunity.

Fujitsu-Siemens: Fujitsu, founded 1935, is a Japanese company specializing in semiconductors, air conditioners, computers (supercomputers, personal computers, servers), telecommunications, and services, and is headquartered in Tokyo. Fujitsu employs around 160,000 people and has 500 subsidiary companies. The partnership with Siemens AG was established in 1999 in the form of Fujitsu Siemens Computers (FSC), one of Europe's largest IT hardware suppliers, and owned 50/50 by Fujitsu and Siemens. 2009, this cooperation was terminated, FSC ended to exist. In future, no laptops will be sold with the brand "Fujitsu-Siemens" but only "Fujitsu".
Fujitsu: Fujitsu is a Japanese technology group listed on the Nikkei 225 with origins dating back to 1935. Its products and services focus on information technology, telecommunications, semiconductors, networks, computer and communications products and advanced microelectronics.
In 1999, the cooperation with Siemens in the IT sector (servers, notebooks, desktop PCs, etc.) started under the Fujitsu-Siemens brand. 10 years later, this cooperation ended.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 is part of the lower middle class. The performance can be compared with an elder X600, but technically it is a X1300, which is scarcely 100 Mhz higher clocked.
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400: The NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 the competitor to the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400. Caution there are some versions with reduced momry bus available.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2300: X2300 (renamed X1300 / X1350, only DirectX 9 support) with amplified video functions (HD).
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G: The 8400M G is a pared-down 8400M GS with only half as much Stream Processors and a smaller memory bus. Therefore, the performance is much lower and only as fast as the old 7400 card. Only MPEG-2 acceleration.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400: This DirectX 10 graphic card from ATI is the direct competitor to the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS graphic card for laptops. It features the Avivo HD video engine. The performance is not enaough for DX 10 games and high settings.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470: Faster clocked HD 3450 and successor of the HD 2400 XT but with DirectX 10.1 and due to the new 55nm process, higher clockspeeds. Avivo HD video functions allow the decoding of HD videos.
NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS: Compared to the 9300M G, the GS has only 8 unified shaders but a higher clock rate. Therefore, the performance should be similar according to Nvidia. Supports
Hybrid-SLI (GeForceBoost and HybridPower) with Nvidia 9100M G and PureVideo HD (VP3).
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
ATI Radeon HD 3200: Onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip (on RS780M chipset) based on the HD 2400 graphics core. It also features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos. Beware: Under Windows XP the HD 3200 may have no 2D accelleration because of a driver problem.
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
ATI Radeon Xpress 1100: The successor of the Xpress M200 integrated shared memory graphic card is based on a x300 core. Aero Glass should run fluently on the card.
ATI Radeon Xpress X1200: This is an onboard video chip and according AMD optimized for a good price/value. It is based on a X700 design but with less pixel- and vertex-pipelines. ATI Radeon Xpress X1200 is hardly apt for gamers. The graphic chip supports Windows Vista Aero surface and all 3D effects run fluently. Sometimes also called Radeon X1200.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M: The GeForce GT 240M is the successor of the GT 130M / 9600M and has now 48 instead of 32 shader cores. Therefore, the performance should be noticeable better. Because of the 40nm process, the TDP is still 23 Watt.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)
AMD Turion 64 X2: AMD Turion 64 X2 is intended to be positioned against the Intel Core Duo was presented in 17. May 2006. The current consumption is not higher than with Centrino-Duo-notebooks (TL-45 with ATI Xpress and Mobility Radeon X300). This means, that approximative the same battery runtime and fan functions can be expected (with this chipset). However, the performance was 20% below the T2300 (1.66 GHz) due to the lower L2 Cache (Core Duo has 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Nevertheless, the performance is sufficient.
TL-52:
In 90nm produced dual core processor with a low clock rate of 1.6 GHz. The TL-52 is still based on the K8 core and compareable to a slower clocked Core Duo.
TL-50: In 90nm produced dual core processor with a low clock rate of 1.6 GHz. The TL-50 is still based on the K8 core and compareable to a slower clocked Core Duo.
TL-64:
In 65nm produced dual-core processor based on the K8 core. Compareable performance to a 2.0 GHz Core Duo CPU with 1MB Level 2 Cache (Celeron Dual Core e.g.).
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T7100: Entry level to mid-range (at the time of annoucement) dual core processor based on the Merom core.
P8600:
Fast but still not overpriced dual core CPU. For most games and multimedia applications sufficient and due to the 25W TDP even for smaller notebooks useable.
P7350:
Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.
T6600: Entry level Core 2 Duo dual core processor with a small 2MB level 2 cache and without virtualization functions.
Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.
T3200: Entry-level dual core processor with a slow performance due to the old Merom core and a small level 2 cache.
AMD Turion X2 Ultra: The AMD Turion X2 Ultra is part of the Puma platform and a mixture of the old K9 core (form the Turion 64 X2) and some parts of the K10 architecture (memorycontroller, hypertransport, crossbar switch from the Phenom). Because of the increased L2 cache ("Ultra" CPUs) and the improved memory controller, the performance increased a bit. Still a similar clocked Core 2 Duo is noticably faster.
ZM-80:
Mixture out of two K8 based cores and K10 uncores (e.g. memory controller). Offers improved power saving functions compared to older Turion CPUs but still not as good and fast as a Core 2 Duo. The ZM-80 is the slowest CPU of the ZM series and a entry level CPU in 2008.
AMD Athlon X2:
QL-60:
Similar to the Turion X2 CPU, but with reduced power saving functions (no deep sleep, only 2 instead of 3 P-states).

17.00: This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.7 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3.6 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
74.26%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
