Last week, Xbox Game Pass subscribers received three new games, including a remastered collection of two legendary titles from the 2000s. For the third week of July, only one game has been confirmed so far: the quirky first-person shooter High on Life from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. Still, there’s a good chance Microsoft will expand the lineup and announce more titles soon.
If you're a fan of Rick and Morty, there's a good chance you'll enjoy High on Life, as its humor is just as absurd and over the top. The premise is every bit as wild as it sounds: Earth has been invaded by an alien drug cartel that uses humans as a source of their next high. You play as an ordinary teenager who suddenly becomes a bounty hunter on a mission to take down the alien syndicate. To help you on your journey, you’ll wield a range of talking weapons – each with its own bold personality. They constantly fire off one-liners and react to nearly everything you do or don’t do.
In High on Life, players jump between planets to hunt down bizarre alien bosses, blast through gooey outposts and collect new upgrades, resources and more of the game’s chatty, animated weapons. Each victory brings you one step closer to taking down Garmantuous – the ruthless leader of the alien cartel. According to the German gaming magazine 4Players, the game shines with its ridiculous humor, though the gunplay leaves something to be desired, earning it a score of 6.5 out of 10. On Steam, however, reception has been much more positive, with over 16,000 reviews averaging a “Very Positive” rating of 89%. Metacritic paints a more balanced picture: a critic Metascore of 69 and a User Score of 7.4.
High on Life joins Xbox Game Pass on July 15 and will be available via cloud, console and PC. You can get a first glimpse of the game’s chaotic charm in the trailer below.
