Cloud services support for webOS ends in January
An email sent yesterday by HP Web Services reveals that cloud services support for webOS devices is going to end on January 15. This newsletter also shows the reason for this decision - "more than three (3) years after the last device was sold, only a small fraction of the devices are still connecting." Considering this fact, the company decided "the time has come to shut down the services."
Devices powered by webOS like the HP TouchPad tablet will still be able to run webOS, but most features connected to the cloud services will disappear. The list of features affected includes the following: HP App Catalog (no more downloads of updates and apps), lost password recovery, new devices setup, backup/restore devices to/from the cloud.
In advance of the public shutdown of the webOS cloud services, new app purchases will end on November 1, followed by App update submissions, closing on November 10. Fortunately, most webOS-powered devices can be loaded with Android or Linux versions, although unofficial ports.
