In Terminator: Resistance, players take on the role of Jacob Rivers, a resistance fighter battling Skynet’s machine army in the film series’ “future war” setting. As part of the Resistance, you face the iconic T-800 units and make choices that shape the fate of fellow survivors. While the missions follow a linear structure, they also include alternate routes, optional objectives and hidden resources to discover.
Terminator: Resistance builds on classic FPS mechanics while adding RPG elements such as a skill tree for stealth, hacking and combat. A companion system and multiple endings provide variety and replay value. Fans especially praise its dense atmosphere and faithful depiction of the Terminator universe. This is reflected on Steam, where 91% of roughly 15,000 user reviews are positive – a sharp contrast to the much more mixed reception from critics.
GameStar’s German review equally praised Terminator: Resistance for its atmosphere and generous fan service. Thus, players and critics alike generally agree that the adaptation of the Terminator universe is convincing, yet the editors pointed to weaknesses in gameplay: dated technology, unthreatening enemies and weapons that lack impact. The story is also predictable and, with a runtime of about eight hours, relatively short. In the end, GameStar awarded the game only 65 out of 100 points.
On Metacritic, Terminator: Resistance holds a Metascore of 60 and a User Score of 8.1, once again showing that fans responded far more positively than critics. The gap likely stems from different priorities: professional reviewers tend to emphasize technical quality, convincing enemy AI and engaging combat systems, while dedicated Terminator fans value atmosphere, familiar details and a respectful adaptation of the films – and that is exactly where Resistance delivers.
