Blackview BV8000 Pro

If you are the kind of phone user who can’t avoid dropping your phone once in a while this Chinese manufacturer may have an answer for you in the Blackview BV8000 Pro. While phones these days are getting slimmer than slim they aren’t getting any tougher like the bygone era of your mother's Nokia 3310, which is still the running gag among users who remembers it even in 2017. The Blackview BV8000 Pro was originally unveiled at the MWC 2017. Let's take a look at what the phone offers. The first thing to note here is this phone is IP68 rated which means it is both dust and water resistant up to a depth of 1.5 m for 30 minutes. While it has the said rating this device doesn’t have any protective covers for its connectors. This is a little awkward although Blackview has made sure the connectors themselves are impermeable. In terms of chassis material and construction the Blackview BV8000 Pro is made out of a mixture of some rubber dampeners and plastic, no metal chassis here. Depending on your take, this is either disappointing or a smart move, although it is understandable as metal chassis tend to dent. Overall, the rigidity is as advertised with no noticeable flex. Hardware-wise the Blackview BV8000 Pro is powered by a Mediatek Helio P20 MT6757 chip, 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage with expandability via the microSD slot. The Blackview BV8000 Pro is also equipped with a Sharp IGZO FHD screen, which has excellent color reproduction and is also quite reasonably bright even when used outdoors under sunlight. Adding to its rugged theme the panel is also protected with Corning’s Gorilla glass 3. As with most smartphones these days the Blackview BV8000 Pro is also equipped with a fingerprint reader which is located on the back of the chassis. Moving along to software the Blackview BV8000 Pro is pre-installed with Android 7 Nougat with unusual software such as an Earthquake Warning System, Sound Meter and a Heart Rate app. This might prove useful and isn’t the usual bloatware users have come to expect of most android devices. Fortunately, as bloatware is kept at a minimum. In terms of performance everything ran smoothly as expected. However, the performance is somewhat mildly disappointing when compared to competitors. Lastly the Blackview BV8000 Pro is equipped with a 4180 mAh battery which should keep this device satiated in its power needs. Normal usage shows that the phone tops out at 27 hours on a single charge while on 3G, which is about on par or even slightly better than most smartphones out there. Being a rugged phone, the Blackview BV8000 Pro might suit professionals at a relatively affordable price. However, when compared to its predecessor it seems that it is less balanced this time around. Blackview BV9000 Pro

There aren’t many smartphone makers that make rugged phones anymore. Many manufacturers used to have a dedicated series for their rugged phones and these phones were usually on the low-end side with nothing much to offer other than their solid built quality, water and dust resistance and a much bigger and heavier body. These days, only one large phone maker makes rugged phones and its none other than Samsung with their Galaxy S-Active series. However, a new Chinese company called Blackview is slowly becoming well-known for their rugged phones. The Blackview BV9000 Pro is their latest offering. For a start, it has a Mediatek Helio O25 processor with the ARM Mali-T880 GPU. Coupled with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB ROM, it should offer a very respectable performance. The display is a 5.7-inch IPS screen with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and a resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels. If there is one huge let down in this device, it is definitely the screen. The display offers decent outdoor visibility and sharpness but its low resolution definitely shows in some areas especially video playback. The rear optics has a dual camera setup with a 13 megapixel and a 5 megapixel f/2.2 shooter. Photo quality is decent and the portrait mode is a plus point considering that this device is a budget phone. Low light images on the other hand appear to be a disaster and nothing much can be adjusted to get a proper shot. The camera shoots videos in 4k. But again, do not expect much from a budget device. The front camera has a 8 megapixel sensor and selfies taken with this camera are decent enough to be posted on facebook and Instagram. The Blackview BV9000 Pro is shipped with a heavily customized Android 7.1 Nougat. However, even with all the customization, performance it is still good with no lags while switching between apps or running heavier apps. Being a rugged phone, it does look and feel huge. It weighs in at 253 grams and has a dimension of 81.1 x 162.0 x 13.4 mm. It has a rather unique hexagon kind of shape with a big chin and forehead. The bezels on the side are very slim, making it look like a well-designed 2017 device. The device does not have a headphones jack but is supplied with a USB type-C to 3.5mm audio jack cable. An OTG cable is also supplied in the box just like how Samsung does it. The physical buttons has been replaced with on-screen buttons and the physical buttons for volume adjustment and power feel nice and have a good click to it. The phone has a IP-68 rating and its ports are covered with flaps to avoid water damage. Its rugged body assures that the phone will survive a few drops. The Blackview 9000 Pro is shipped with a massive 4180 mAh battery and the supplied fast charger can give it a full charge in about 1.5 hours. The Blackview 9000 Pro is certainly a good looking rugged phone with good specs and battery life. Its lower price point makes it easier to purchase for users who are in need for a rugged phone without adding a casing to a normal phone. In the past, they’d have to fork out a larger amount to get a Samsung device. However, the screen resolution is a letdown, but for its price, this is forgivable. Blackview has always been known for its effort in producing rugged smartphones that are protective against drop-down damages and also comes with shock absorption, dust and waterproof and battery temperature support. This is definitely an applaudable effort as it caters for the workers who are likely to deal with unpredictable circumstances in the working environment. Having said that, the latest Blackview BV5900, is no different. This phone has been introduced with an all in all shock, water and dustproof. The overall industry-leading rugged rubber covering makes BV5900 more stringent as compared to any of Blackview’s previous lines. In addition, the silicone layer and multiple rigid layers which has been incorporated within this model definitely adds an extra value when it comes to absorbing shock. This obviously improves the overall user experience. Apart from that, the IP68 and IP69K certification also ensures its 1.5m deep waterproof support which can eradicate user’s fear if the phone was accidentally dropped in the water. The 5.7 inches HD AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is definitely undefeatable in its presentation. It caters for fabulous visual experience for users while watching videos or even when hovering on YouTube. The phone also provides a resolution which is up to 720p screen resolution. This again, improves the overall user experience.

As compared to all the previous rugged smartphones, this model comes in with a futuristic look which has been inspired by the science-fictional space capsule design. BV5900 comes in three different colors namely orange, army green and black for users to choose from based on individual preferences. With its waterproof capability and durability, this phone is definitely the best choice for those who love mountain biking, fishing, surfing or any kind of water or sport adventures. This smartphone will definitely heighten the user experience to an entirely new level. However, it should be noted that this model was mainly intended for diverse and hardcore professionals which makes it quite a disappointment for all the gamers out there. But, the 3GB of RAM can definitely cater for decent game playing but nothing over the top per say. In contrast though, the MT67961 Quad-Core 2.0 GHz processor can obviously boost other app performances within the smartphone. There is also 32GB RAM and expandable memory support up to 128GB for a large number of photos and videos storing. In terms of its battery, BV5900 has been incorporated with a massive 5580mAh battery which is said to be able to keep the phone alive for nearly 600 hours in standby mode. Even when gaming, the phone can stand for up to 12 hours overall. As for the camera, BV5900 has a 13-megapixel IMX214 rear camera which allows photo snapping just like a professional photographer. There is also a 0.3-megapixel sub camera to automatically adjust the field depth along with a 5-megapixel selfie camera. But, the best part about this phone has to be its waterproof capability which allows underwater photo shooting. Every smartphone does come in with its own unique features and flaws but there is definitely somebody out there who would benefit from it in a way on its own.

I didn’t find the native launcher particularly intuitive, but you can always load your own (I tried Nova Launcher and it worked fine). My biggest disappointment was with the quality of the main (RGB) camera, especially given the 48MP sensor. Blackview makes a big deal out of Night Mode, for example, but it is not as good as either Google’s or Huawei’s. The captured JPEGs also aren’t quite as good as they could be given the high-resolution sensor. Blackview could do a lot to address that by supporting RAW capture, at least in third-party camera apps, but says it has no plans to do so. Then again, it is a $500 phone with a ton of other features, so it isn’t entirely fair to compare image quality to a typical $700+ flagship model. Plus, if you need thermal imaging, the only other smartphone-based solutions will cost you twice as much.

The Blackview BV9200 competes in a fairly niche segment where only a few smartphone makers compete. Nevertheless, Blackview managed to put together quite a capable device, offering a significant upgrade over its predecessor while introducing some scarce features in the €300 price category. Even when put against "normal" smartphones. We believe the handset strikes a nice balance between ruggedness and modern features. Sure, the Helio G96 SoC isn't amazing, but it seems to be doing just fine with the 120Hz display and in the context of Android 12 OS. We are also surprised to see the ultrawide camera with autofocus, 256GB of standard storage + dedicated microSD card slot, fast 66W charging and impressive 30W wireless charging. One of the few downsides of the BV9200 is its inadequate display brightness and battery life. As an outdoor-centric smartphone, we would have wished for better sunlight legibility and much longer battery life. As far as alternatives go, we found the Ulefone Armor 17 Pro to be the closest match as it features roughly the same hardware, albeit being more expensive. The Ulefone contender has a bigger battery and a night vision camera on its side but skips the stereo speakers and offers slower wireless charging. So at the end of the day, the BV9200 is a well-balanced rugged phone that implements many of the essential 2023 features without breaking the bank.

Our experience with the BV9300 was heavily coloured by being sent a model built for the Russian market. It refused to connect to the Google servers, making it essentially useless for anything that uses Google apps or services. This phone comes in two flavours, one with an ample LED light on the rear, the “Lighting” model, and the one we got, the ‘Measuring’ version. If you haven’t guessed, the critical feature of this model is a laser beam (or is it infra-red?) that allows the phone to measure distances with a reasonable level of accuracy.

Blackview:

This brand from the Blackview International Group was created in Hong Kong in 2013. Smartphones are the focus of marketing.

However, there are only few reviews and the market shares are very low (2016).

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

ARM Mali-T860 MP2: Dual-Core version of the Mali-T860 graphics card from ARM for mostly Android based smartphones and tablets. E.g. in the Mediatek Helio P10 clocked at 700 MHz and produced in 28nm.

PowerVR GE8322 / IMG8322: Entry level graphics card based on the PowerVR Rogue architecture with support for OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan 1.1.

ARM Mali-G57 MP2: Integrated mid range graphics card with 2 clusters. Based on the Valhall architecture.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

ARM Mali-T880 MP2: Mobile graphics solution for tablets and smartphones, which can be found in ARM SoCs (for mostly Android based devices). The Mali-T880 can be built with 1 to 16 clusters, where the MP2 version features 2 clusters/cores.
