The Asus VivoBook S550C is priced at an MRP of Rs 57,999. It’s clear that the premium is for the slim form, touchscreen and switchable graphics. However, we still feel that it’s priced quite steeply. Full HD display, backlit keyboard, Core i7 processor and more powerful discrete graphics would have completely justified the price of this laptop.

The ASUS S550CM is a good performer in both office applications as well as gaming. Its display quality is nothing to write home about, but it is nevertheless as responsive as you would expect of a Windows 8 capacitive multi-touch screen. The large 15.6"screen size makes it ideal as a desktop replacement, rather than an Ultrabook that can be carried around, as it is a little heavy. ASUS provides a nice carry bag along in an attempt to take care of this issue. One of the interesting things to note about this laptop is its switchable graphics that can switch between discrete NVIDIA and onboard Intel graphics according to application load, and thus help get a better battery backup. It doesn't just look good, but also sports excellent build quality. The battery backup time is also noteworthy for a laptop with discrete graphics. It is priced at Rs 58,000, which is Rs 5000 less than the Acer Aspire M3 Touch, but we would rather recommend the latter for it holds the edge as far as overall performance and battery backup is concerned.

Getting the full Windows 8 experience—touchscreen and all—doesn’t have to be expensive. The Asus VivoBook S550CA falls short in some performance areas and features, but for many mainstream users, it's still a decent computer for a great price.

The VivoBook’s standout feature is not the Ultrabook label … it’s the touchscreen. Many inexpensive systems offer touch, and prices creep downwards by the month, but this is the first laptop we’ve tested to offer edge-to-edge glass. We’d prefer a higher-quality panel beneath, but most competitors do no better.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M:
Essentially a renamed GeForce GT 555M available in two or more variants with 96 or 144 shaders and 128 bit / 192 bit DDR3 or GDDR5 memory.
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3517U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 3.0 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
Intel Core i5:
3317U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.7 - 2.6 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.5 kg:
This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
2.7 kg:
74.43%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
