There’s little headroom for VR and future-proofing, it’s ergonomically middling, and it doesn’t have the features or power of pricier rivals. That said, the GTX 1060, solid Full HD screen and decent components elsewhere mean the GL702VM is an excellent and affordable gaming laptop.

This machine is inevitably built with compromise in mind, but the Asus gets it right in key departments. The GTX 1060 is an excellent mid-range GPU, the screen has the ideal resolution and G-Sync alongside decent quality, and the processor is capable.

The Asus Strix GL702 is truly a gamer’s wish come true. Gone are the days where gaming laptops bear mammoth and bulky forms. Asus newest offering is a gaming machine, which the Taiwanese manufacturer describes as “compact and potent”. At first glance, it is hard to believe that the GL 702 is a gaming rig. Its dimensions measure at 415 x 280 x 22~24 mm and it weighs barely 2.7 kg. This makes the Strix the ultimate platform for gaming on-the-go. Its slimness and sleekness may be deceiving; yet, its build is sturdy and robust. The Strix has a aluminium-plastic black exterior with orange accents on logos, the trackpad and the keys. The tactile gaming keyboard is clearly designed for gaming. The anti-ghosting keys increase the precision of the commands even when multiple keys are hit simultaneously. The keyboard also features the exclusive Overstroke technology, a stylish red backlight, a key travel of only 1.6 mm. The Asus Strix GL702 is equipped with a 17-inch panel with 178° ultra-wide viewing angle technology. Furthermore, gamers can choose between Full HD or 4K UHD resolution. Gamers are also offered more screen and less bezel, thus increasing users with a wider viewing experience. Nvidia’s G-SYNC technology greatly reduces lag, minimizes frame rate stutter, and eliminates visual tearing and thereby providing gamers with richer visuals.
Performance-wise, this machine is powered by a 6th generation Intel Core i5 dual-core processor combined with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics with full Microsoft DirectX 12 support. The Strix GL702 is also fitted with 8 GB of DDR4 RAM. This meets a wide array of users’ needs from heavy gaming to productive multitasking including live streaming and video editing. Users have the option to boost the ROG Strix GL702 with up to a SATA 2 TB 2.5' HDD of storage space and 32 GB of RAM. It’s readiness for VR technology guarantees gamers of an immersive virtual reality experience. Its cooling system is equally impressive as it is integrated with a compact hyper-cool, triple-copper thermal module which uses heat pipes and three fans to increase CPU and GPU performance. Connectivity options consist of USB 3.1 Type C port, USB 3.0 ports, and a Thunderbolt port. Mounted on board is a webcam and this is complemented with noise-cancelling microphones. Sound quality is rich and audible as it is engineered by Icepower. Networking is supported by both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. It comes pre-installed with Windows 10 Home. The Asus Strix GL702VM-GC020T is clearly a gaming laptop that targets more normal users. While the ROG series takes on the heavyweight champions from Alienware, MSI and Razer, the Strix is made to take on normal consumer-level gaming laptops such as the Dell Inspiron 15. In some way, these machines are better than the hardcore gaming laptops because they can actually be used as a laptop.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.7 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

80%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
