Performance & Endurance? With the N82JV, Asus has launched a multimedia notebook that is supposed to distinguish itself by a good performance and, at the same time, a long battery life, due to Nvidia's Optimus technology...

The ASUS N82Jv has good graphics, a nice screen, and a USB 3.0 port…if only it weren't so heavy.

We mentioned earlier that ASUS could probably benefit from a bit of simplification and consolidation in their mobile lineup. Let's discuss that a bit more. A simplified lineup is something Apple does very well: they have the standard MacBook, a Pro version with a better LCD and chassis, and then two larger Pro laptops that add switchable graphics. There's little confusion over what's what, though obviously there are a few gaps that Apple doesn't quite cover.

The ASUS N82Jv-X1 is a stylish and powerful notebook, limited only by its substandard battery life. At $999, it costs the same as the Lenovo IdeaPad Y460, which offers slightly less performance in exchange for greater battery life. However, if endurance is what you're after--and we can't imagine anyone not wanting that attribute in a 14-inch system--then the Gateway ID49C08u ($849) represents the best deal. But for gamers who won't stray too far from an outlet, the N82Jv is worth a look.

Although the Asus N82Jv-X1 is a powerful mainstream laptop in every respect—thanks to its fast Core i5 processor and top-tier Nvidia chipset—the HP Envy 14 and Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 have a slight edge in overall performance.

The N82JQ is a powerful and fairly well built notebook by Asus that can handle any task thrown at it. Despite having a 14" screen, it seems to have all the strengths and weaknesses of a standard desktop replacement. While Asus did manage to make the N82JQ one of the most powerful 14" notebooks around, prospective buyers should be aware that the computer is most in its element while plugged in and being used by one user.

If notebooks were cars, the $1,199 ASUS N82JQ would be a Mustang--great performance, but very poor mileage. Even though the ASUS N82JQ has plenty of muscle, its short battery life and high heat levels leave a lot to be desired. It's a bit expensive, too: the Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 ($999) offers similar performance and endurance, not to mention better media controls. We suggest waiting for the Nvidia Optimus model of this notebook, whose lower price and longer endurance will make it a far more compelling system.

Laptops are less expensive than ever, and that fact is changing how we perceive computer value. Case in point: the Asus N82Jv-X1 is a nicely featured laptop with an Intel Core i5 processor and automatic-switching Nvidia GeForce GT 335M graphics for $999, but in today's market it doesn't feel like a value. For $999, Asus' graphics-boosted 14-inch laptop lacks battery power, and has few distinguishing features that push it over similarly priced (or less expensive) alternatives.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.
Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M: The GeForce GT 335M offers 72 shader cores (compared to the 48 of the GT 330M) and is based on the GT215 core (GTS 350M).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
620M:
The Core i7-620M is the fastest Dual-Core CPU for laptops (at the time of introduction in Q1 2010). The 620M clocks betwenn 2.66 and 3.33 GHz due to the Turbo Mode and because of Hyperthreading, 4 threads are executed simultaneously. In the package, Intel also included a second die with an integrated GPU (GMA HD) and a memory controller. Therefore, the TDP of 35 Watt of the whole package is still quite good.
720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
Intel Core i5:
450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
No weight comment found (one expected)!
75.13%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
» Further information can be found in our Notebook Purchase Guide.
