Acer Aspier 5820T: Timeline X
Source: Inside HW English
We've noticed distinct heat build-up left of the touchpad, above the discreet graphics chip, which you can feel on your palms. Acer has made additional ventilation holes on the front and bottom sides, which conduct some of the heat away. The battery lasts for almost seven and a half hours on Intel graphics, while gaming on Radeon will provide you with no more than just over an hour and a half. Making friends with Acer reminds us of using an advanced multifunctional device - it is high-quality and has everything that you need, but it doesn't shine in any particular field. Of course you can buy a better gaming machine, a business computer or a notebook with extreme autonomy, but if you need all this under one hood, the elegant Aspire Timeline X 5820TG is an excellent choice and gives a perfect reply to the question of which general-use notebook one should take.

Acer Aspire TimelineX 5820T Review: Less Extreme than Advertised
Source: Notebooks.com English
The Acer Aspire TimelineX 5820T-5951 doesn't really have any one spec that makes it stand out in a very crowded class of thin wide-screen do-it-all notebooks. It does have above average battery life and a very good screen. The touchpad is decent and for a Core i3 system it is someone powerful while still running cool and quiet. The options for viewing multimedia content like DVDs or streaming video are pretty good. But the weak speakers and sub par keyboard are disappointments. If you don't plan to do a lot of typing and like to wear headphones for audio, this is a great option even if it is a little expensive. Otherwise there are better choices out there for the money.

What keeps the TimelineX 5820T from a recommendation, though, is the price: if you're spending this much, the Dell Studio 15 starts to look more tempting. But this remains a strong debut for the TimelineX series. It's fast, battery life remains strong, and it has far more strengths than it has weaknesses.

The 15.6in Acer TimelineX 5820T delivers an unusual combination of lightning real-world performance and very good battery life, all contained in a well-made slim chassis. If you can find it, the version with ATI 5750 graphics card has incredible gaming performance, while the integrated Intel graphics alone makes the TimelineX fit for some leaner gaming.

Thanks to those switchable graphics, the 5820T performs well as a light, portable, power-saving device and also does a decent job of turning its hand to more intensive computing tasks. Unfortunately, this impressive range of tricks isn't reflected in the design -- no media keys, a rather dim screen and a frustrating trackpad mean that even if the 5820T is capable of some impressive computing feats, you might not enjoy actually using it.

We've been loving the Acer Aspire Timeline design since it came out about more than a year back, and while the design hasn't been updated. The Aspire TimelineX series in the pursuit of the extreme: extreme performance, extreme battery life, extreme connectivity and extremely thin designs. With the new Aspire TimelineX series there is no need of making compromises: you can have it all.

Last time we reviewed an Acer Aspire Timeline laptop — the 14in 4810T, which we tested in mid-2009 — we were impressed. This time we've got our hands on the new Acer Aspire TimelineX 5820TG, which is a notebook equipped with a 15.6in screen. We think the Acer Aspire TimelineX 5820TG is a great notebook. It's comfortable to use, and despite its size it is not inconceivable that you could lug it to and from work or uni.

Acer reviews

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middle class DirectX 11 capable graphics card with a power consumption of about 15-20 Watt. Supports Eyevision (up to 6 monitors)

AMD Radeon HD 6550M: Renamed Mobility Radeon HD 5650.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470: Entry level DirectX 11 chip with GDDR5 support but only 80 shader cores. Supports Eyefinity (up to 4 monitors) and 8-ch HD audio over HDMI. Performance on par with the old GeForce 8600M GT.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i5:

430M:

The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.

460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

480M: The Core i5-480M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.66-2.9 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

Intel Core i3:

330M:

The Core i3-330M is a slower clocked 350M and therefore also lacks the Turbo Boost feature and clocks with max. 2.13 GHz. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

370M: The Core i3-370M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.4 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.378 kg:

This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

2.8 kg:

This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.

80.16%: This rating should be considered to be average. This is because the proportion of notebooks which have a higher rating is approximately equal to the proportion which have a lower rating.

» Further information can be found in our Notebook Purchase Guide.
