Desktop-replacement laptops don't necessarily need to be the size of a headstone. The 15.6-inch Acer Aspire 5536 has more sensible proportions that most models. In fact, it's essentially a smaller version of the recently reviewed 16-inch Aspire 6530. The configuration of the Acer Aspire 5536 that we reviewed, the 5536-643G50Mn, is better value than the recently reviewed 6530-623G25Mn. It's smaller and lighter but similarly specified. The keyboard is much more comfortable too, making this a laptop that's well worth a look if portability is only an occasional concern

As the reader comments in any netbook review will tell you, it’s possible to buy a fully-fledged laptop for the same price as some Intel Atom-powered portables. Such complaints miss the point a little — netbooks have never been about performance, but about providing go-anywhere access to basic applications that would otherwise require an expensive ultraportable — but not completely. The question is if you’ve only got £400 to spend on a portable and don’t fancy a netbook, what kid of laptop can you buy? A good — andf good-looking — budget option for a big screen laptop.

This Acer Aspire is a stunningly usable entry-level media centre that is truly hard to fault. Despite its limited performance, the Aspire 5536-643G50Mn is stunning value for money. Its stylish design, vibrant widescreen panel, impressive specification and great usability make it hard to fault. At such a low price, this is a truly fantastic laptop for the home or office.

The Acer 5536 is a conspicuously designed laptop, with a tasteful blue exterior, shiny lights and a curved case that feels reassuringly solid. The glossy CineCrystal display is eye-catching too, and feels bigger than 15.6in. You'd never guess this is such a cheap laptop. A cheap and cheerful desktop replacement that cuts acceptable corners to hit the low price

Acer needs to do something about its Aspire laptop naming scheme; it's not exactly intuitive to go into a shop and ask for a 5536-744G50Mn! Nevertheless, based on previous efforts such as the award-winning Aspire 7735Z-424G32Mn we're hoping for good things from this well-specified, AMD-based 15.6in machine. A jack of all trades but master of none, Acer's Aspire 5536-744G50Mn is worth considering if you're after a budget laptop, but depending on your needs the competition may offer better alternatives.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Radeon HD 3200: Onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip (on RS780M chipset) based on the HD 2400 graphics core. It also features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos. Beware: Under Windows XP the HD 3200 may have no 2D accelleration because of a driver problem.

AMD Athlon X2:
QL-64:
Similar to the Turion X2 CPU, but with reduced power saving functions (no deep sleep, only 2 instead of 3 P-states). Compareable to a 1.3-2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo (depending on the application).
AMD Turion X2: The Turion X2 (without 64) is based on the Turion X2 Ultra, but has only 1024 MB L2 Cache and is therefore slower (performance compareable to the old Turion 64 X2). Because of new parts from the K10 architecture, the CPU should be more energy efficient.
RM-74:
Griffin based entry-level dual core processor. The cores are still based on the old K8 architecture (memory controller is newer).

2.8 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
2.8 kg:
75%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
