The best smartphones of Autumn 2022 - 44 phones in review
The best of the best - Smartphones with the highest overall scores
It was a quarter of high-quality phones: 10 models received the overall rating "very good" from us in the last 3 months.
The best phone comes (once again) from Samsung: the Galaxy Z Fold4 5G achieves a 90% overall rating and continues to please with its folding concept, high performance, and robust case, which is even IPX8 certified. However, there is hardly any progress compared to the predecessor and the price is still very high (almost $1,325 at the time of writing at Amazon US). Criticisms like the slow charging technology and the bulky casing still exist.
Second place will be interesting for gamers: the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro offers a cool rear display, ultrasonic triggers at the edge, a screen with up to 165 Hz, and a high sampling rate for the touchscreen. Compared with the predecessor, there is primarily more performance and a new camera sensor that enables better pictures.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is an excellent camera phone with one of the largest image sensors on the market. However, the phone has one major drawback: it is only available as an import device in Europe. You also have to live with somewhat inaccurate tracking, high waste heat, and strong throttling. The long runtimes, and the high performance, but especially the image quality of the camera might be worth these limitations.
The Asus Zenfone 9 is without an alternative. Why? Because there are hardly any powerful phones with displays smaller than 6 inches anymore. Thus, those looking for a compact high-end smartphone will be well advised with the phone. Also because the bright display, the good runtimes, and the fair price ($663 at Amazon US) speak for the smartphone.
The Honor Magic4 Pro (about $1,069 at Amazon US) is the first flagship smartphone from Honor in Europe and also marks the return of the once popular phone manufacturer to Android with Google services. The software takes a bit of getting used to but can be extensively adapted to the user's needs thanks to the Android base. The camera is convincing all around and enables great pictures with a combination of a high-resolution main camera and periscope zoom.
If you are not averse to a manufacturer that is a bit more exotic in Europe, the Vivo X80 Pro is one of the currently best Android smartphones with a fast system, bright AMOLED screen, great fingerprint sensor, and very good camera. However, some aspects are not acceptable, such as the lack of Wi-Fi 6E or only 1080p video recordings in some modes.
The Xiaomi 12S Pro, like the Ultra model described above, is only available as an import. It is a slight upgrade of the Xiaomi 12 Pro which is regularly available in this country and has correspondingly adapted software (Global firmware). Thus, you should consider whether the differences in detail really outweigh the disadvantages of an imported phone.
Sony builds a new phone with the Xperia 1 IV - a very independent top smartphone - and demands a self-confident price for it ($1,398 at the time of writing on Amazon US). The phone places itself more as a special tool that enables extensive settings, especially in the camera area but neglects the automatic mode in return. Sony could also improve the charging technology: 30 watts are hardly up to date.
The last two smartphones with a very good overall score come from ZTE and Vivo.
The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra has three high-resolution cameras, so low-resolution macro or wide-angle pictures are a thing of the past. Other manufacturers, even in the top league, could take a cue from ZTE, which integrated the fast USB port, and the front-facing camera, that is invisibly hidden under the display. The latter is chic and innovative, but the selfie cam is not yet convincing in terms of image quality.
The Vivo X Note is only available as an imported device in Europe, but it supports all necessary frequencies to access mobile Internet worldwide. The camera setup and display are convincing. We only have to criticize the high-end phone for the lack of Wi-Fi 6E and the uncertain update policy.
Our Favorites - Editors Choice Awards Autumn 2022
Based on our test results during the period under review, we conduct an editorial vote and subsequently award the Editors Choice Award.
The award is given to smartphones that stand out for their successful overall package, absolute top performance in specific areas, or a particularly good price-performance ratio, and that represent an attractive purchase option for our editors in the respective category.
Google Pixel 6a
The Google Pixel 6a is a bit handier than other smartphones, but it does not have to make itself small at all thanks to the fast Google Tensor SoC and the great dual camera.
Google also guarantees a long update period and offers a bright AMOLED screen. Criticisms can be made about the slow charging and that the phone for just under $390 (at the time of writing at Amazon US) only has a 60 Hz display.
Nevertheless, the independent design and the pure Android with unique features speak for the compact phone.
Samsung Galaxy XCover 6 Pro
A smartphone with a replaceable battery is now a rarity. However, Samsung, of all the top dogs, still has one on offer: the weatherproof, stable, relatively light, and reasonably powerful Galaxy XCover 6 Pro (about $600 on Amazon US at the time of writing).
Even though Samsung saves the charger this time and the smartphone could have a higher screen brightness, especially as an outdoor phone: the robustness, the restrained exterior, and the exchangeable battery resulted in a position where the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro is almost unique.

More interesting phones in the fall of 2022
The cell phone from a new manufacturer certainly got the most attention: the Nothing Phone (1) stands out due to its unusual spelling, and then one of the two founders of OnePlus, Carl Pei, is behind the brand. The Glyph interface on the back is a nice gimmick, the phone offers a long update promise and good runtimes. However, it is not enough for a revolution or a price-performance hit.
The Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G for less than 400 Euros (for example at amazon.de)) you get a bright AMOLED screen, a good camera, long runtimes, and fast charging.
