Clevo laptops, sold through brands such as Sager, Eurocom, and Schenker/XMG are popular among the enthusiast community for offering machines that usually favor maintainability and upgradeability over cutting-edge designs.
Clevo has now released a refresh of their N240 14-inch laptop, which comes with the new Intel i7-8550U. Since this is a ULV laptop, the dimensions are reasonably compact for the screen size at 0.87-inch (22mm) thick, but a “bare bone plus battery pack” weight of 3.98 lb (1.8 kg) puts it in the company of the more powerful Razer Blade 2017 and Gigabyte Aero 14.
Key specifications are:
- CPU: Intel i7-8550U
- GPU: Intel UHD 620
- RAM: Up to 32 GB DDR4-2400
- Screen: 14-inch 1920x1080 IPS
- Storage: 1 x M.2 2280 NVMe + 1 x 2.5-inch 7mm
- Ports: 1 x USB3, 1 x USB2, 1 x USB Type-C, HDMI 1.4b, VGA, SD card reader
- Networking: 1000 Gbps RJ45 LAN, 802.11ac
- Battery: 44 Wh (external access for swapping packs)
The base configuration from Sager, the NP3246, starts at US$899 and comes with 8 GB RAM, a 1 TB 5400rpm HDD, and Windows 10 Home. This arrangement is all right for those who are comfortable with doing their own upgrades and cloning the hard drive to a faster SSD, but for everyone else, we recommend changing the configuration to have an M.2 SSD as the boot drive before purchasing since this will give better speed and simplify later storage upgrades.
Barebone systems are likely to be around US$200-250 cheaper than this configuration, such as this one at US$669 on Amazon spotted by Lilliputing.
