Xiaomi’s electric vehicle arm set a new record in September, handing over more than 40,000 cars to customers in China. It marks the first time the company has reached that monthly threshold, indicating how quickly it is gaining ground in the country’s crowded EV market.
The SU7 sedan, launched in March, is pitched as a rival to Tesla’s Model 3. Its counterpart, the YU7 SUV, debuted in June and is aimed at the same segment as Tesla’s Model Y. Demand for the SUV has been especially strong. In August, deliveries nearly tripled from July, helping push Xiaomi to its latest record.
The surge has left the factory running at full tilt. New SU7 buyers currently have to wait up to 38 weeks, while YU7 orders may take as long as 48 weeks for deliveries. However, representatives of the Chinese technology company say production is being ramped up and delivery cycles adjusted to shorten the delays.
The September result builds on the 36,396 cars delivered in August. Xiaomi hasn’t broken down the latest figures by model, but the milestone highlights its fast climb in China, with global ambitions expected to follow in the coming years.
