WD follows Samsung in releasing a 1TB laptop HDD

Samsung and Western Digital could be the first companies to bring out 9.5mm single-bay laptop HDDs

This could be a very exciting step forward in the notebook storage area. Till now the optimum sized hard disk drives come in a maximum of 750GB capacities, and for a 1TB HDD one has to choose the larger 12.5mm double-bay piece. But thanks to Samsung and Western Digital, we now have single-bay 1TB hard disk drives. The Samsung Spinpoint M8 HN-M101MBB and WD Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT 2.5” drives come in 9.5mm height, making your upgrade to 1TB easier.

Note that both these HDDs actually have two platters of 500GB each. These run at a speed of 5400 revolutions per minute and 8MB cache.

Other features include,

·         SATA2 3Gb/s interface

·         Latency of 5.6ms (Samsung) and 5.5ms (WD)

·         Dimensions: 9.5mm x 69.75mm x 100.3mm (Samsung) and 9.5mm x 69.75mm x 100.2mm (WD)

The Samsung HDD comes at a price of $99.99 whereas WD costs 10 bucks more. You can order both of them here and here at Newegg but when we last checked – the Samsung HDD was out of stock.
