US government investigates cyber attacks on water suppliers in Pennsylvania and Texas
The US government has discovered evidence of two separate cyberattacks directed at the nation's water supply systems.
The first incident occurred on November 24th when the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa in Pennsylvania fell victim to the hacking group known as Cyber Av3ngers. The attackers have taken control of one of the authority's stations, which uses Israeli-owned control systems. However, operators quickly switched to manual operations once the breach was detected, preventing disruption to local water service.
Cyber Av3ngers, a suspected Iranian government-linked cyber group, has been targeting U.S. water facilities that utilize Israeli-made technology.
In a separate incident, the North Texas Municipal Water District has also been targeted. The group Daixin Team has claimed responsibility and says it has stolen over 30,000 files containing personal customer information and internal documents from the water district, which serves nearly two million residents.
Cybersecurity analysts have linked Daixin to financially-motivated ransomware schemes predominantly targeting the healthcare industry.
The US government is working to determine the extent of the attacks and ensure the security of water suppliers across the country.
