In recent months, it has been possible to see many cosmic events in the night sky, such as meteor showers. But autumn also has a few surprises in store, as two comets could be visible at the same time.
Thus, it is possible to mention the comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon), which was discovered on January 3, 2025, by the Mount Lemmon Survey. And during the first observations, its brightness was not strong enough to be visible to everyone. But as it travels through our solar system, it has gained in brightness.
Since last August, it has become increasingly easier to observe and is now at a magnitude of 8.5. And if it encounters no obstacles in its way, it should reach a magnitude of 3.9 on October 21, 2025.
As a result, this could make it visible to the naked eye, as it was the case with Neowise. But be warned, you will need to be in a place with no light pollution to be able to see it properly. Furthermore, astronomers estimate that the best time to observe it would be shortly after dusk, looking towards the stars Arcturus and Izar.
A second comet that will appear at the same time
The second comet that could be visible in October is none other than C/2025 R2 (SWAN). It was discovered by Vladimir Bezugly and orbits the Sun every 22,554 years.
To observe it near the star Spica, you will have to wait until October 21, when it will be located 0.27 astronomical units from Earth at a magnitude of 4. But beware, because the chances of seeing it with the naked eye are difficult to predict, as comets behave unpredictably and can fragment during their journey. Therefore, it is preferable to have binoculars or an amateur telescope.
