Many celestial objects travel through space and sometimes pass through our solar system, as is the case with this interstellar visitor. But yesterday, an asteroid measuring several hundred meters passed close to our planet.
This is asteroid 2025 FA22, discovered on March 29, and which was likely to collide with the Earth in 2089. But, after further observations, this threat has been averted.
However, its passage at a distance of approximately 835,700 kilometers from Earth at a speed of 36,000 km/h caught the attention of astronomers around the world. And not for nothing, because the asteroid is quite large, measuring between 130 and 290 meters.
Thus, it was a unique event for all scientists, who were able to collect data to define the true size of this celestial object and its morphology, which will enable a better understanding of its behavior later on. In addition, its passage at 2.2 lunar distances served as training for the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), simulating an impact scenario on our Earth.
Finally, this asteroid will pass close to us again in the coming centuries, which will allow us to better understand its behavior and trajectory, as well as its composition. According to scientists's estimates, its next passage in 2089 will be 6 million kilometers away, while in 2173 it will pass just 418,900 kilometers away.
