Google may have forgotten the Pixel 2 XL, but developers have brought Android 12 to the device in the form of ProtonAOSP. The custom ROM will soon be available for the regular Pixel 2, too.

The Pixel 2 series will never receive Android 12 from Google, but developers have brought the new OS to the Pixel 2 series. Previously, it was possible to load Android 12 Generic System Images (GSI) on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, but ProtonAOSP is the series' first custom Android 12 ROM.

Currently, ProtonAOSP only supports the Pixel 2 XL, but a Pixel 2 ROM is in development. According to a forum post, encryption does not work, and SELinux is set to permissive rather than enforcing. By contrast, GSI builds support encryption and have SELinux enforcing, albeit with no in-call audio.

ProtonAOSP's developers insist that all major features are functional though, including:

  • Active Edge
  • Bluetooth
  • Cameras
  • Cellular radio interface layer (RIL)
  • Fingerprint reader
  • GPS
  • Wi-Fi

ProtonAOSP is distributed as factory images, so you must flash them via Fastboot. The ROM is available with and without GApps, although we should stress that you may need to re-partition and wipe your device's storage during installation.
