Tesla unveils futuristic driverless Robovan for passengers and cargo with low operational costs per mile
Tesla introduced its long-rumored Robovan at the Robotaxi event, and it looks just as shiny, silvery and futuristic. "We are doing this, and it is going to look like that," confirmed Elon Musk.
The Robovan fits 20 passengers, but can also be used for moving cargo, as Tesla will be manufacturing it to be "autonomous transport for groups or goods, from mass transit to construction to food service."
Elon Musk stayed light on details like the Robovan's price, specs, or the exact release date timeframe. Tesla pegs the mass Robotaxi production and release for 2026, so any Robovan will likely be coming after that is done and dusted.
Tesla thinks that the Robovan and Robotaxi together will be the future of mass transit, as they will bring very low operational costs and will help turn parking lots into parks with greenery.
Without the need to pay a driver, or extra costs like steering wheel, pedals, and the connected paraphernalia, the Robovan can indeed be made cheaper to produce and operate.
While presenting the Robotaxi on the stage, Elon Musk mentioned that traveling with it will cost at most $0.40 per mile, and gave a comparison with a bus pass, but stayed mum on the Robovan operational cost calculations.
