Snow White Office. A solidly built office notebook with good input devices is being sold for 899 euro. The new S range is the predecessor of the ceased SR series and is supposed to especially satisfy office fans. Sony combined the smallest Arrandale processor, i3-330 and Nvidia's 310M graphics. If these key numbers are sufficient for a 13 inch all-rounder will be shown in our comprehensive review.

The $1,049 Sony VAIO VPCS11FM/s has a lot to offer, including a fast Intel Core i5 CPU and Intel’s Wireless Display technology, all wrapped in an attractive, easy-to-carry package. As a Best Buy exclusive, it also such perks as a two-year warranty and a complimentary year of antivirus protection. If you don’t mind carrying a heavier but still portable 14-inch notebook, we recommend the $899 14-inch Toshiba Satellite E205.

The Sony Vaio VPCS111FM/S is an exclusive Best Buy Blue Label laptop, like the Toshiba E205-S1904 and Dell Studio s15z-2249CPN. With an Intel Core i5 processor and Wireless Display technology packed into a 13.3-inch laptop, the Vaio VPCS111FM/S is a great all-around, small notebook that costs a little more than we'd like to pay.

The Sony VAIO S11 ticks all the right boxes for an 80% work/20% home laptop, but the best news is that the usual VAIO issue - the price - is only a small one here. At $2041 for this particular model, it's around $400 dearer than our previous favourite, Lenovo's ThinkPad T500, but it bests its ageing rival in almost every area of specification. We haven't yet seen Lenovo's Core i5 and i7 ThinkPad updates, but until we do, the Sony VAIO S11 takes the business laptop crown with ease.

Sony's latest Vaio S series laptop is well-specified, comfortable to use and lightweight. It's not perfect though and the very similar but cheaper Vaio VPCS12L9E/B is a better value alternative. It has a slower Core i3 processor instead of an i5 chip, has 4GB instead of 6GB of RAM and doesn't have a built-in 3G modem or fingerprint reader. If you can live with these compromises, you can save around £320.

Mobile Office. Handy, mobile and good performance. Sony's 13.3 incher does without superfluous ballast, such as dedicated graphics card and invests in a DVD drive, docking port and HSDPA. Find out why this just doesn't work, despite high mobility.

The Vaio S doesn't really do enough to stand out from the crowd. It has a great keyboard and super screen for video (though this is highly reflective), solid build and fast performance - but battery life is not brilliant and at more than £1,000 it's relatively expensive.

Although not exactly inexpensive, the Sony Vaio VPCS13V9E/B costs a good deal less than Toshiba’s Tecra M11-17W. However unless you’re into a bit of gaming on the weekend you could probably save even more money by going for a model without the nVidia graphics.

If environmental considerations are important to you then the fact that 85% of the plastics in the VAIO VPCS13V9E/B are made from recycled materials may well appeal. You’ll also like that the LED is mercury free. The plentiful RAM and large hard drive might make this laptop appropriate for small business users who lack networked services and carry all their data and applications with them at all times, but you’ll be stacking these factors up against a somewhat heavy build and relatively expensive price.

Sony reckons the Vaio VPC-S13V9E/B is equally suited to work and play, thanks to its powerful processor, integrated mobile-broadband modem and dedicated Nvidia graphics chip. The Sony Vaio VPC-S13V9E/B offers good performance and some neat features, such as an onboard mobile-broadband modem. But we're not sure this 13.3-inch laptop warrants its hefty price tag.

We're big fans of the Sony VAIO VPCS139LE/B. It costs quite a bit less than the Toshiba Portege R700-15x, offers a broadly similar experience when it comes to power and portability, yet at the same time offers better usability. A great machine and one that is easy to recommend.

The Sony VAIO S is a stylish and sturdy laptop, well-suited for students and business users. Portability has been well-taken care of, with the laptop weighing just 1.69 kg. Sony has paid attention to the ergonomics of the keyboard, allowing you to use it for longer periods without experiencing fatigue. Battery life has increased, thanks to the newer components such as the Sandy Bridge processor. The same processor, along with the capability to switch to AMD Radeon graphics turns it from a long battery life portable laptop to a high performance workstation. Although you have to pay extra, Smart Battery does provide you with the option to instantly double the battery life, which is something like a boon for people on the move. One major gripe about this otherwise excellent laptop is its poor display quality. If the display would have been better, it would have been very easy for us to recommend this laptop. While you can configure it online before you buy, the configuration we received costs Rs 56,990, which is a bit on the higher side, considering the fact that it does not come with a Blu-ray drive.

Sony's VAIO S132GX offers a middle ground in their ultraportable laptops but it still is a bit too expensive compared to the competition. At $1000, it should have more than 320GB hard drive space, a faster processor and certainly better battery life. Having said that, Sony does still offer some nice things including some excellent wireless connectivity and performance in addition to an internal DVD burner which many companies are dropping from ultraportables.

The 'low-end' model, which should cost a very reasonable £900 or so, comes in a silver finish and lacks 3G, while the far more attractive high-end offering - which will set you back around £1,000 - sports a black exterior and has 3G built-in (but we'd go for the latter based on looks alone). You can expect both these beauties from the end of March.

The Sony S Series has much competition in the ultraportable space. Other brilliant laptops, like the Asus U line, Acer’s Timeline and Toshiba’s Protege, also provide outstanding portability but offer Core i5 processors for less than the base Sony S Series with a Core i3 under the hood. When it comes to bang-for-the-buck, this laptop can’t compete.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 310M: The GeForce 310M is the successor of the GeFore G210M and based on the same chip with very similar clock rates (shader speed +30MHz to 1530MHz).
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
AMD Radeon HD 6470M: Entry to middle class graphics card based on the Seymore XT codename featuring the UVD3 video processor.
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
