Slide presentation leaks upcoming BlackBerry platform name

BBX could be the operating system to replace the aging BlackBerry OS

The BlackBerry PlayBook is so far the only tablet from RIM that runs on a QNX platform while BlackBerry smartphones are still stuck with BlackBerry OS. This is all set to change as future RIM smartphones are expected to run on a QNX operating system similar to the one used on the PlayBook, resulting in a more unified infrastructure between phones and tablets from RIM.

The company, however, has yet to announce an official name for the mutual operating system, but a recent slide from a presentation at the QNX Auto Summit in Japan may have accidentally leaked the moniker as BBX. The fact that the name is referenced within the same context as iOS and Android reinforces the name leak.

With the BlackBerry DevCon in San Francisco just a couple weeks away, we are fully expecting a formal announcement of the BBX platform in addition to the much awaited 2.0 update for the PlayBook. With the more unified operating system, it’s safe to assume better synergy and app support between RIM devices as well.
