The new Chromebox model makes a world debut, and Chromebook receives a hardware refresh

In an increasingly competitive market of sleek form factors, Samsung takes a spin on the portable desktop form factor, the Chromebox Series 3, as well as an upgrade from the first Chromebook to second generation.  Below is a rundown of important specifications found on the devices.

Despite what the name may suggest, the Series 3 is the first of its kind. The Intel Celeron B840 inside is on par with the mobile Chromebook. Samsung also plans to release a more powerful Intel i5-2450M processor for the desktop with an undisclosed release date. Its storage sacrifices capacity over speed with a 16 GB solid state drive over a hard disk drive.  Noteworthy are the six USB 2.0 ports, and while profuse, the lack of USB 3.0 connectivity seems unexpected. Weighing in at just 2.45 lbs., the Series 3 Chromebook makes for a good portable workhorse.

The Chromebook Series 5 is the full mobile experience, and it received a modest refresh from a 45nm Intel Atom N570 to a 32nm Intel Celeron 867.  This upgrade allows a higher performance ceiling, and better heat dissipation than the previous archetype.  The 1280x800 resolution display is normal for its size. Other laptops of this size may have 1366x768 displays instead. The Chromebook is 3.3 lbs heavy and 0.79 inch thin. The storage is similar to the Chromebox with a 16 GB solid state drive.

The processors found on the lineup came from the previous generation and may seem lacking on paper. They may be all the juice required, however, since Chrome OS is an enhanced browser backed by web apps, so the hardware requirements are easy to cross.

The devices can be found on the web at Amazon, Tiger Direct, Newegg, Best Buy, and BH Photo in May 30th.  The Series 3 can be purchased for $329.99 USD, and the new Chromebook is available in Wi-Fi and Verizon 3G at $449 and $549 USD respectively.

The Chromebox and Chromebook are available in online stores.
