Samsung introduces new 840 and 840 Pro SSDs

At the Samsung event here in South Korea, the company has unveiled the successor to their 830 line of drives- the 840 and 840 Pro SSDs

At the SSD Global Summit here in South Korea, Samsung has taken the wraps off their new 840 lineup of solid-state drives, which is the successor to the popular 830 series. The 840 drives will come in two flavors, the regular 840 SSD which is aimed at individuals, and the 840 Pro which targets businesses and corporations. Both models are outfitted with 6-GBPS SATA and are prime candidates for inclusion into thin Ultrabooks due to their sub-7mm thickness.

Samsung's new MDX controller is the brains behind the improved power efficiency on the drives, and the new 2.0 NAND offers 400 MBPS per channel as opposed to the 830's 133 MBPS. The 840 series also include AES-256 encryption support and up to 512MB LPDDR2 cache.

As far as drive capacity goes, the "vanilla" 840 SSD will be available in 120, 250 and 500 GB sizes, while the 840 Pro offers more options and space with 64, 128, 256 and 512 GB capacities. We still haven't been able to run the drives through the appropriate benchmarks, but Samsung's slides did reference sequential read and write speeds of 540 MB/s and 330 MB/s respectively.

With regards to random access of 4KB blocks tested with IO Meter, Samsung's announced a 98,000 read IOPS (Input/Output Operations per Second) and a 70,000 write IOPS for the 840. The 840 Pro managed to do even better, as it recorded 100,000 IOPS on random reads and 90,000 on writes.

While the new line of drives hasn't hit shelves yet, Samsung expects it to be available sometime in mid-October. The 840 Pro will be available for a starting price of 100 Euros for the 64 GB capacity and will range up to €580 for the 512GB model. The 840 SSD is rightfully cheaper, beginning at  €105 for 120GB and rising all the way up to €450 for the 500GB version.
