The vertical range of the view stability already leads during moderate angle changes to a massive change of the brightness. The stability of the horizontal range is sufficient.

The 915 GMS Integrated Grafics solution with up to 128MB video memory is particularly with 3D applications much better than comparable obboard grafic chips.

The 1.8" hard disk (ident with the one used in the Toshiba the Libretto U100) exhibits data transmission rates below average, but the access time is comparable with with larger models.

The Pentium M ULV 753 with 1,2 Ghz and altogether 512 MB memory offer sufficient performance for various office applications and preserve the duration time of the battery.

Results of measurement with HDTune
The test of the transfer rates of the hard disk brought the following results:

Transfer rate minimum: 7.2 MB/sec
Transfer rate maximum: 21.2 MB/sec
Transfer rate average: 16.7 MB/sec
Access time: 19.0 ms
Burst rate: 64.1 MB/sec
CPU Usage: 5,9%

The measurement of the colour tone shows a relatively good red and green curve as well as a strongly deviating blue curve, which is noticeable in a warm colour of the display. The test of the creation of cloudy stains resulted averagely.

Result

Certainly the Toshiba Portégé R200 is the eyecatcher with its slim lines on each conference table. Further the outstanding quality, workmanship and material choice must be mentioned. Innumerable Toshiba software-tools, make updating, configuring and connecting very easy.

The performance of the laptop is satisfying and results with its duration time of battery in a reasonable totalpacked.

One disadvantage: the display shows clear weaknesses in the point of view stability and brightness.

Altogether, a good notebook for all those, who demand an extremely mobile computer and prefer a good design.

Duration time of the battery

The maximum duration of the battery was tested with the program BatteryEater. In the Classic test (high performance requirement) with maximum display brightness and WLAN switched on a running time of 1h and 52min could be determined. In the reading test (low performance requirement) with deactivated WLAN, however with maximum display brightness the 3800mAh worked 3h and 24min.

Altogether the duration of the battery is satisfying.

Current consumption
Min (WLAN off, min. Brightness): 15.1 W
Idle (WLAN on, max. Brightness): 19.1 W
Max one (all max., load): 28.2 W

Emissions

Under full load the Portégé R200 remained without too large warming up. The peak value 37.7°C was measured at the lower surface of the equipment.

The ventilator remains with average requirements almost always switched off. If one increases the power demand, then the ventilator increases the power over four levels up to a still moderate volume of 39,8 dB. Afterwards the performance is reduced rapidly.

Noises of the hard disk can hardly be noticed like already with the Toshiba Libretto U100.

Measured volume
Environment: 31,0dB
Idle, ventilator out: 31,0
Load, ventilator Level 1: 32.0 dB
Load, ventilator Level 2: 33.5 dB

Load, ventilator Level 3: 35.6 dB
Load, ventilator Level 4: 39.9 dB

Display

The non-reflecting display works somewhat too darkly. The represented colors generally are somewhat pale, and it comes again and again to brightness falsifications on change of the point of view.

The 12.1"Polysilizium display creates a resolution of maximally 1024x768 Pixel. The measurement of the brightness confirmed the first impression: With maximally measured 103.4 cd/m², this display is not very bright. The brightness for inside usage is sufficient, but during bright environment light or direct sun exposure the display fails.
Illuminating amounted to moderate 78.2 %. The following diagram shows, that the darkest zone is left below and the brightest zone on the top right.

Input devices

The keyboard is well inserted in the case, only noticeable was a loose adjustment screen at the top side.

The keyboard is relatively generous and pleasing despite the slim chassis. The keys have a sufficient pressure way and give feedback by a clear pressure point.
When particularly fast tapping sometimes there can be heard clearly perceptible noises. With strong pressure on the keys there occurs an easy perceptible but negligible tortioning of the keyboard unit .

Like already with the Libretto U100 the Curser-keys are positioned downwards and so better accessible.

The touchpad responds excellently, and also the sliding qualities of the surface are positive. The two touchpad-keys confirm the high-quality impression - they do not move a millimeter until one presses them.

As safety extra the Toshiba Portégé R200 already offers like the libretto U100 a finger print reader.
Also the proven Toshiba audio volume control wheel can be found.

Case

Despite the generous dimensions (formate DIN A4) the Toshiba Portégé surprises with its relatively small weight of only 1.3 kg.
Since the material of almost all parts is magnesium, this mobile computer feels very durable and torsionally stiff. The chassis of the Portégé measures in the opened condition 13 millimeters and the display of about 7 millimeters. Furthermore an extremely good workmanship can be discovered.

The entire laptop presents itself in a kind "steel-metallic" colour, and pleases particularly by its slim design.

Particularly well pleases the reflecting touchpad, with which one can control the perfect outlook of its tie at any time...

Also the hinges work very precisely, whereby however one must point out that the maximum opening angle is limited with 130°.

The weak point of the Portégé R200 is a missing optical drive assembly. This is not in the scope of supply included, however separately available. Caution with the purchase of an external drive assembly is required due to a missing Firewire port.

Review Toshiba Portege R200

Fortunately there are notebooks, with which the design has at least the same value as the performance of the laptop. Concerning the Toshiba Portégé R200 the occurance even is in the foreground.
Extraordinary thin and very light - these are two adjectives, which apply extremely well to the Portégé R200. In addition like the libretto it has implemented extensive security-tools and options for connection such as finger print reader, Bluetooth, etc. and is well designed.
However: Beauty has its price
