ATI Radeon HD 4225 vs AMD Radeon HD 7290 vs ATI Radeon HD 4100

ATI Radeon HD 4225

► remove from comparison

The AMD ATI Radeon HD 4225 (sometimes also ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225 called) is an onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip in the RS880M chipset. It is based on the HD 3400 graphics core and features the UVD 2 video engine to decode HD videos (Avivo HD - can decode two HD streams simultaneously). Compared to the HD 4200 and 4250, the 4225 offers a worse performance due to the slow clock speed.

The UVD 2 video engine is able to decode HD videos (MPEG-2, H.264, and VC-1) in all stages and allows the fluent playback of HD videos (e.g. Blu-ray) with a relative low CPU utilization (called Avivo HD). The HD 3200 was the first onboard graphics card that allows the fluent playback of Blu-ray videos. The UVD 2 in the HD 4225 supports the decoding of two video stream and therefore got a full Blu-Ray support.

The graphics core of the HD 4225 stems from the Mobility Radeon HD 3400 series and is therefore DirectX 10.1 capable. Because of the missing graphics memory, the performance of the card is a bit lower than of the HD 34x0. Theroretically, dedicated memory chips can be directly added to the chip, making it a dedicated graphics card. Because of pricing it is unclear if any manufacturer will add memory to the chip.

Still older games like Doom 3 or Quake 4 should be barly playable

AMD Radeon HD 7290

► remove from comparison

The AMD Radeon HD 7290 (or sometimes also called ATI Mobility Radeon HD 7290) is an integrated graphics card in some Ontario netbook processors (e.g., C-70). Technically the 7290 is just a renamed Radeon HD 6290 and therefore also based on the same graphics core as the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 but without any dedicated memory. Furthermore, it features the newer UVD3 video processor. Compared to the slower HD 6250, the 7290 / 6290 features Turbo Core to overclock automatically to 400MHz.

The 3D performance of the HD 7290 is located in the low end above the integrated chipset graphics card of the 880M chipset (e.g. Radeon HD 4250). Due to the slow processor, the gaming is however very restricted. Only very old and low demanding games run fluent in low-medium detail settings (e.g. Half Life 2). Even non demanding games like Trackmania Nations Forever can only be played in low details. However, compared to the integrated graphics card in Atom processors (GMA 3150), the HD 7290 clearly wins.

The new UVD3 video decoder allows the decoding of HD videos using the graphics card. It allows the parallel decoding of two MPEG2, H.264 and VC-1 streams and therefore compatible to BD-Live. Furthermore, the new UVD3 also supports DivX, Xvid and MPEG4 Part 2 decoding. Blu-Ray 3D via MCV (Multiview Video Coding) of the UVD3 is not supported due to the low processing power.

The power consumption of the HD 7290 is quite low as it is directly integrated in the processor. The whole processor containing northbridge parts, a memory controller and the GPU is specified with 9 Watt TDP.

ATI Radeon HD 4100

► remove from comparison

The AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4100 or just Radeon 4100 is an integrated graphics card (shared memory) for laptops. Compared to the HD 4200, the HD 4100 probably features a lower clock speed (and perhaps also some features are stripped down). According to differencebetween.net the clock rate is just 350MHz and therefore below the low power HD 4225.
