Oppo has teased its first foldable ahead of its full unveiling on December 15. The new device follows a very similar design approach to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series although appears to feature a wider front display.

Oppo has been making some of the most impressive Android flagship smartphones over the past few years. In particular, the Oppo Find X series have been innovative and featured premium build quality and designs. It looks like it has taken what it has learnt about making these phones to its first premium foldable device, the new Oppo Find N.

The company has posted a short teaser video (below) and one of the company’s top execs, Pete Lau, has taken to its blog to announce the Oppo Find N. Perhaps to deflect attention from its obvious similarities to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, Lau highlights that Oppo has been working on the Find N intensely over the past four years. This is said to have included six generations of prototypes before arriving at the final design we know lay witness to.

We don’t know a lot about its specifications, but if it is going to compete with the Galaxy Z Fold series, it will need to have some heavy artillery onboard like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 for starters. One area where Oppo may have successfully differentiated from the Galaxy Z Fold3 for example is with its overall form factor, which seems a little more squat or compact. This has allowed for a wider front display – the Fold series has been criticized for having a front display that is too tall or narrow for proper usability.

Naturally, software will also be very important if the Find N is to be successful. Samsung has spent considerable time creating a custom version of One UI for the Z Fold series so that it is better able to take advantage of its larger main display when unfolded. Of course, Google has recently announced Android 12L, a version of Android tailored for larger screen devices, so this could play into Oppo’s favor. All will be revealed on December 15 when Oppo launches the Find N foldable in full.
